The highest-profile online game on the PS2 is back in SOCOM II: US Navy SEALs. Although Sony have so far taken a more laid-back approach to their promotion of online games, compared to Microsoft and the Xbox, the original SOCOM nevertheless managed to become the most popular online console game ever. Bucking the trend of most video game sequels, this follow-up actually manages to improve on the original, fixing many of the niggling flaws that permeated it.

Not that SOCOM II is radically different from its prequel: far from it; it's still a squad-based combat simulator very much in the style of Rainbow Six and the legion of other Tom Clancy-inspired tactical shooters. Here though the emphasis is on user-friendly controls and teamwork with real human players. The game features proper support for clans (groups of players that regularly play together) and is much better at keeping out cheaters. There are also 12 new maps to play on, in addition to the 10 from the original game, and two new multiplayer modes that have clearly been influenced by Counter-Strike.

Sensibly, though, the developers have paid just as much attention to the single-player mode, with a complete overhaul of the graphics and increased voice support that allows you to bark commands at your computer-controlled team mates (as long as you've got a USB headset) instead of mucking about with the ( still very good) menu system. All of this makes SCOCOM II the perfect way to get into online gaming. --David Jenkins

Having played the excellent first Socom for the last six months I was expecting something amazing for the second, and I wasn't disappointed. The graphics, sound and effects are awesome and the online gameplay has to be the best in ANY game, although the offline game does have a few drawbacks which is why I gave it four stars. It's sometimes difficult to get out of an enclosed room when your team are following you as they don't move out of your way (which they are supposed to according to the manual) and they seem to have 'borrowed' the cutscene dialogues from 'No-one Lives Forever' but without the humour!

Apart from those little niggles I think the game is great and look forward to playing it constantly until Socom 3 comes out!

Socom was great online but Socom 2- woah!!
Brilliant especially with the headset!! I would recommend this game to anyone, better weapons then socom 1, better graphics everything!
They have even updated some of the old levels of socom 1 in online play and they are so much better.

Definitely worth the money!!

I've had a playstation for ages and this is by far the most addictive, fun and generally amazing game i've played on. In my opinion it is more entertaining and challenging than all the GTA's. A great feature for this game is the headset (which can be purchased with the game) which really involves you in the action. Even if you do not have the ability to go online and play this it is still a fantastic game which has the potential to emulsify you for months. Like any other challenging game, you are likely to get frustrated at times. But if a games not challenging, it's no fun. Playing online is also great, you can play aginst friends and if you have headsets, hear them moan in annoyance as you thrash them. A must have for any playstation enthusiast.
