Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

A lot of games have some pretty weird concepts, but in Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg you have to wear a magical chicken suit given to you by Menie-Funie, god of the chickens, and save the world of Morning Land. Suffice it to say that Billy Hatcher is not based on a true story--but its lack of plausibility is matched only by the quality of entertainment it provides, in what is unquestionably Sonic Team's best ever 3-D platform adventure.

The goal of the game is to rescue a golden egg on each cunningly designed level, but the gimmick that allows you to do so is your ability to roll giant eggs around the world and either squash bad guys with them as you go or throw them around like boomerangs. If you manage to run over various types of fruit with an egg it will also grow until you're able to hatch it and get a power-up or magical helper. The latter tend to be cuddly creatures with freakish magical powers such as an icy-breathed seal or a flying fire-breathing lion. The hatchlings are the key to many of the games puzzles, as you try to find a way to freeze a waterfall or burn through to hit a switch.

Despite the cute visuals this is no pushover and is easily one of the most fun and inventive games of recent times. --David Jenkins

4.0 out of 5 stars Return to form for Sonic Team, 20 Oct 2003
Billy Hatcher is a classic Sonic Team title, with great graphics, animation, effects, level design and all-round polish. I should stress though, that this is not graphically going to rock your world - it's impeccably designed but uses the Sonic Adventure graphics engine so it won't make your Gamecube sweat too much.
Cuteness is a big deal here- this is an old-skool kids game like Mario64, and like that uses the same 1/2 dozen levels repeatedly with different objectives and playable characters. There's an element of Pokemon with the use of sidekick characters as you hatch your eggs - which add more depth to the game than initially appears. Sonic can even be found in these eggs! That, plus some astounding downloadable GBA games and a compulsive 4 player mode make this one for the whole family.
Maybe I like this because it's old-fashioned, but it really does evoke the feelings of 'cool' when you knock over a gang of crows (disguised as, um, cats) with your egg, or hatch it to find a little penguin to help you out. If you like platformers, you'll love this. If not, it'll make you gag and go back to GTA.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2003's most original platformer..., 1 Mar 2004
Don't be put off by the day-glow visuals - Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg is a hardcore platformer - and one of the most inventive, and original of recent years. The game builds upon principals explored in games like Mario64 with wonderfully difficult Monkey Ball-esque ramp runs. This game has it's flaws, but it's design quality still shines through and if you stick with it, you'll be handsomely rewarded. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Egg-sellent (sorry), 16 Oct 2003

Unlike the previous reviewer, I have actually played the full game - the US version, at least. I've seen no sign of glitches as they've described, but what I have seen - and seen a lot - is fun. It's great to roll eggs over enemies, for some strange reason. I agree with most of the other review, but it might be worth mentioning that the game's a little easy in places, and is over all too soon.

No doubt the FIFA and GTA-loving crowd wil see this as a kiddy game with no merit. It's their loss - buy this because it's great.
