5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime!, 27 Dec 2007
By Scriabinmahler (Cambridge UK) - See all my reviews

This is an outstanding recording of 7th. Barenboim's strength is the way he generates maximum degree of depth and intensity without resorting to distortion and exaggeration. He lets music flow as naturally as possible and speak for itself. Every movement thoughtfully paced, sensitively crafted, every climax as overwhelming as possible. This is no doubt one of the most impressive and sublime accounts of 7th in decades.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but by no means great, 25 Jul 2008
By Mike "dmh220551" (Hampshire, UK) - See all my reviews
I must beg to differ from the previous reviewer. While I enjoyed this performance and the recording is a good one, Barenboim is apt to slow down and speed up rather too much (although I would admit his approach to speed changes is more subtle than some other conductors). What is lacking is a clear sense of the musical argument (sometimes called "line") running through this work. Barenboim is more concerned with dwelling by the wayside to smell the flowers or whipping up the tempo into the big climaxes.
