In the breezy Maid in Manhattan, a maid in a top-flight hotel (Jennifer Lopez) chances to dress in a guest's clothes just when a handsome political candidate (Ralph Fiennes) walks in. Naturally, he's bowled over and pursues her; he's initially drawn to her gorgeous good looks but soon comes to appreciate her honesty and common sense. Of course, she can't let him know that she's only a maid, and various high jinks ensue--it's all pretty formulaic, but lurking in the edges of this glossy, brainless romance are a wealth of sly turns by Natasha Richardson and Amy Sedaris (as callow socialites), Bob Hoskins (as a dignified butler), Stanley Tucci (as Fiennes' exasperated campaign manager), and many less familiar faces. All help to give Maid in Manhattan the life and texture that has been processed out of the main characters. --Bret Fetzer

DVD Description
Marisa Ventura is a single mother born and bred in the boroughs of New York City, who works as a maid in a first-class Manhattan hotel. In a case of mistaken identity, Marisa meets Christopher Marshall (Ralph Fiennes), the heir to a political dynasty, who believes that she is a guest at the hotel. Fate throws the unlikely pair together for a magical night of romance. But when Marisa's true identity is revealed, the two find that they are worlds apart, even though the distance separating them is just a subway ride away. Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fiennes star in this modern-day fairytale about a single mother named Marisa Ventura (Jennifer Lopez) who is a maid in a posh hotel in Manhattan.
But one day, her son, Ty, bumps into senatorial candidate Christopher Marshall (Ralph Fiennes) who meets Marisa and mistakes her for a wealthy socialite. After an enchanting evening together, the two fall madly in love.
But how long can Marisa lie to Christopher?
This is a very sweet film which is perfect for a girly night in.

Maid In Manhattan is a modern retelling of the classic Cinderella story, while in another sense it is a reworking of the Working Girl formula from the 1980s. Ralph Fiennes and Jennifer Lopez work remarkably well together as the romantic leads. Hotel maid Marisa Ventura, played by Jennifer Lopez, is mistaken by U.S. Senate candidate Chris Marshall, played by Ralph Fiennes, for a rich socialite while trying on a wealthy woman's dress in a hotel room. Romantic sparks fly between the two of them, while the fun and games ensue as Marisa desperately tries to keep up the pretence and overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of love finding its way between these two. What makes things even more difficult is the fact that the press with their hordes of paparazzi and camera crews are continually in hot pursuit of Marshall. Ralph Fiennes was stunning in the Spielberg’s Schindler’s List, but quite honestly he looks out of place playing the male lead in a romantic comedy film. Jennifer Lopez for her part plays the Cinderella role very well and brings a lot of natural energy to her role. Indeed Ralph Fiennes and Jennifer Lopez combine sweetly together, but this do-it-by-the-numbers romantic comedy sadly just does not work out and the result is somewhat disappointing.

I don't normally watch movies so famous actors mean nothing to me. I judge by what I see and this really wowed me. The story of a Maid giving on to temptation and wearing clothes way above her station; of her resultant romance; discovery, and finally her honesty with him, and her willingness to start a new job again from the bottom really was moving. Her reward at the end was beautifully done. A lovely, gentle movie, nothing objectionable in it at all (and I'm pretty fussy) and one I will watch again and again1
