Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
An unlikely success story, Solid Silver is a triumph for grey-bearded folk-club journeyman Mike Silver and very definitely something of a fillip for little guys on little labels everywhere.

In an era of great statistical predictability--where big silly money, strategic marketing and youth brainwashing rule the pop roost--newcomer (though he was briefly signed to Elton John's Rocket Records in 1973) Mike Silver is a veritable anathema. Not as good looking as Robbie Williams, almost as pensionable as Sir Mick Jagger and about as likely to condescend to appear on Top of the Pops as the Clash, singer-songwriter Silver appears to have burst out of Nowheresville and right into the homes of the UK's sensitive, middle-aged intelligentsia with some engagingly scripted songs about love breaking down, moving house, the loneliness of old folks homes and foreign travel, all of which avoid the pratfalls of grand emotional gesturing by honing in on the finer details of humdrum activity and everyday dialogue. Not bad at all for a hitherto-unacknowledged Cornwall-based chap whose voice can be likened to Peter Gabriel gone country ("Angel in Deep Shadow"), whose muse is a little like James Taylor (only British and rather more prone to calculated philosophical resignation) and whose songs (particularly "Not a Matter of Pride") seem to want to make Radio 2 DJs shout with unbridled admiration. --Kevin Maidment

5.0 out of 5 stars Good lyrics are back, 16 Jul 2003
By C McDONNELL (Staffordshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I came across Solid Silver by chance.
This is a fine collection, thoughtful lyrics set to carefully phrased tunes. There is a good balance here between vocals and instrumental.
Quality again, after so many meaningless songs for so long.
Well done, treat yourself, buy a copy and one for a friend.
Mike Silver's craft deserves a wide audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a find!, 13 Jul 2003
By A Customer
First heard title track on the radio, so tried the CD. What a fantastic album. How refreshing to find songs with a story to tell and sympathethic music. Mike has a crystal clear voice and a haunting guitar style. Late night 'curl up' music definately, but great for those reflective moments anytime.

4.0 out of 5 stars not a matter of pride, 7 Jul 2003
By A Customer
I heard this song for the first time this morning and it said everything I was feeling as I have just split up from my boyfriend of 18mths. You just have to listen as both the words and music is mesmerising. I have to buy it to hear the rest of the songs on the album.
