5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking, 11 Mar 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: Ocean Avenue (Audio CD)
To be honest, I'd never heard of this band before february 2006, but after a friend of mine at school lent me the CD, telling me that I should listen to this song on pain of missing out on a great band, I was converted.

Yellowcard are semi rock-punk (to my ears) and they are given that little edge, thanks to the violin, that sets them apart from other bands.

The first two or three tracks put me off somehow, they weren't up to the usual caliber of the bands I usually listen to, but after 'Ocean Avenue' the CD really started to kick in, and I was much less apprehensive.

'View From Heaven' and 'One year, six months' are softer, more melodic songs that instantly (excuse the cliché) brighten up your day, bringing a smile to your face and making you want to sing along to the well written lyrics.

'Only one' is full of emotion, boardering more on the rock-ier side of the albumn, along with 'life of a salesman' whilst 'twenty-three' and 'miles apart' are more punk-like but still definitely worth a listen.

To sum up: get this albumn - its worth a listen! Almost every song will have you singing along and/or headbanging to your heart's content.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, 25 Aug 2004
This review is from: Ocean Avenue (Audio CD)
This is an awesome album...pretty much every track on it is fantastic and you wouldn't bother skipping any of them. Also, so much variation is in evidence...

Believe, Only One, Back Home and Empty Apartment are all extremely cool songs for very different reasons. Some albums tend to trail off towards the end where the band tries to squeeze in the 'fillers' but Yellowcard certainly don't do that, and in this sense Ocean Avenue ends even better than it begins...

So many bands that play this kind of music can be criticised for sounding a little similar. With Yellowcard it's a little different, at least partly down to the 'innovative' use of the violin. The composition of the tracks is so good that some of the instrumental parts are as good as the vocals.

Basically, Ocean Avenue is one of the best albums ive heard this year, certainly up there or better than Deja Entendu by Brand New and Page Avenue by Story of the Year. Recommended for someone looking for something new and a bit different

5.0 out of 5 stars ***Epic Stuff***, 28 Jan 2006
This review is from: Ocean Avenue (Audio CD)
From first hearing of Yellowcard, you immediately associate their strong punk rock roots and their near perfect lyrics with the likes of Blink 182. The Californian rockers on the other hand, offer us an alternative type of instrument, the violin, which intertwines beautifully with the bands melodic tracks. Longineu Parsons’ performance on the drums is simply breathtaking, as is Ryan Key’s talented vocal capabilities.

This is arguably Yellowcard’s best work to date, and it will be remembered as a punk rock masterpiece. The album itself was critically acclaimed and certified double platinum in the United States, whilst it was a notable success in the UK. Although the band was relatively unknown, they have been transformed from utter anonymity to world wide superstars due to the overwhelming success of Ocean Avenue.

Even though the majority of the songs are exceptional, tracks like “Breathing”, “Only One”, and the ever popular and rather emotional “Believe” stand out as the highlights of the album. This particular song relates to the events of September 11th and the brave and heroic efforts of the New York Fire Department.

***A truly wonderful and uplifting album***
