Ghost Rock ROCKS!, 29 Jul 2003
By A Customer
I had a chance to see an early release of the film and really liked it alot! It is one of those low budget films that looks like it should have been made as a big budget and shows in the writing, acting, etc. The film is about a rancher Johnny Slaughter (Michael Worth) who finds that Jack Pickett (Gary Busey), the man responsible for killing his childhood "soul mate" has now become mayor of Ghost Rock, Slaughter's father's town. He arrives there to find it a changed place. When a beautiful female gunfighter (Jenya Lano) arrives, the town and Pickett start to unbury the wicked past.....It's a western but also includes martial arts since the Michael Worth role was raised by a group of Chinese imigrants (led by James Hong) and taught him how to fight. There are only a couple martial arts scenes in the film, but are fun to watch (ecspecially the final brawl between Worth and two opponents). The writing, also done by the star Worth, is very good. There is a strong philosophical tone to the whole film and some very deep romantic "myths" woven into the story. Worth is obviously a talented writer as well as actor. His few scenes with Lano in the film are written an acted with the kind of caliber that takes this out of your typical bang-bang western. Busey is at his gruff best playing Jack Pickett. He and Worth play off of each other well. The rest of the cast that includes Craig Wasson, Christa Sauls, James Hong and Adrienne Barbeau are all very good and with their well developed characters make this an easy film to fall into. The film is directed by Dustin Rikert. Though the film at times seems to have been rushed, where some scenes may not have been shot to best effect or some well written moments slipped by on camera, for a low budget western this film it is well worth renting at least and does provide a good tear, a few laughs and some nice escapism movie making.
