Frantic action with no hurrying., 12 Aug 2003
Three races (soon to be four) with one goal. To survive and conquer. I searched all over the Internet in search of a turn-based game before stumbling across this one. Since then I've had little to no social life but endless hours of fun and mayhem in one of the friendliest communities its ever been my pleasure to be a part of. Laser Squad Nemesis is an extremely easy game to learn and play but with a whole wealth of tactics and game mechanics which make it a joy to master. The combatants:Marines; Human - Commander, Sniper, Grenadier, Grunt, Medic and HQ. Machina; Machine - AI (Artificial intelligence), Missile tank, Exterminator, Hunter, Scanner and HQ. Spawn; Alien - Queen, Drone, Spiker, Buzzer, Goo spitter and Splatter. Each of the three sides has its own pro's/con's and fighting techniques. Each unit, its specialities. Marines are physically the weakest but have agility and good multi ranged firepower on their side. Machina are big and tough, if a little slow, but have the technology and fire power to back it up. Spawn are tough and horrifically quick and will bite, claw, glue you in place, shoot spikes at you, eat you and, in the Splatter’s case, blow up in your face. Where the other two races can heal/repair units Spawn will eat any fallen combatant and lay eggs which will quickly hatch. Now for the best aspect of this game. Apart from the four tutorial missions all your enemies will be guided by humans which history has taught us are the most cunning and devious species to have dealings with. In game artificial intelligence can be learnt and overcome. Humans have to be overcome and learnt. Then, by the time you meet them again, they’ve probably gone and changed giving you a whole different fight. Buy this game and kiss goodbye to all your spare time and sleep. It’s time to say hello to a great online community and game that is constantly evolving. And if you see a player who goes by the name of ‘Runs with Chickens’ be sure to send him a challenge. We’ll be waiting to give you a warm welcome.

Forget the other games, this one has it all, 5 Sep 2003
It's hard to find the words to describe a game such as LSN. Since subscribing 6 months ago it has consumed my waking thoughts, and my dreams. So I'll try to cover the areas the other reviewers missed, though should point out I can't fault a single thing any of them have said. It's all true, and then some. The shop version of the game comes with 3 months subscription. After that (roughly) it's £15 for 6 months or £25 for a whole year. I have personally played about 200 games, at say 25 turns each, each turn taking shall we say 5 minutes. That's over 400 hours of play for my initial £15. How bored am I? Not at all, I just signed up for another year!!! Show me another game that gives you that sort of value for money. And BTW, if anything I'm being conservative with those numbers! The communitiy has been mentioned briefly, but it really is the life and sole of the game. There are 20+ spin off leagues and tournaments that you can optionally get involved, some of which are hugely popular. These are created and run by dedicated (and unpaid) members of the community purely to give something back to the game that's given us so much. I should know, I run one of them! In summary, you will not regret buying this game.

Death and destrutction!!, 29 Aug 2003
Take the phone off the hook, phone in sick at work and tell your friends that you've gone on holiday. One day into getting your copy of Laser Squad Nemesis you'll find yourself holed up in front of your computer, forgetting to eat and wondering what exactly you used to do with your time before you got a copy of this game.Laser Squad Nemesis is a turn-based game, where you control a race of Marines, Machina or Spawn in a bare-knuckle fight across one of almost 100 maps. The novelty of this game is that your opponent isn't some computer-simulated AI, but another LSN player dotted somewhere across the globe, with your turns sent backwards and forwards to each other via any email account. Beat them in a league game, and you're awarded points to propel you up one of the three league tables. Lose, and you plummet back down to where you came from. And as you get better at the game, the game evolves with you. You learn more tricks and techniques, you learn how to second guess your opponent and best of all, you can join one of the clans that have evolved within the game - fight alongside the terrifying expertise of the Faceless Consortium or cower in the shadows as a member of the 8-bit Fanatics. Either way, there are dozens of other competitions you can play inside LSN, fighting as a team, or as a solo player. there is little else that can deliver the raw addictiveness, the frustration and the jubilation that Laser Squad Nemesis can supply.
