5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant - just brilliant!, 25 Aug 2008
By Diane Burke (Perth, WA formerly Aberdeen UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is definitely the strongest season of UpDown where we see the lives of the Bellamy family and their stalwart servants through the dark days of World War I.

The series uses locations at times which was very necessary to feel the fervant patriotic send-offs or where we see the newly wed Edward & Daisy farewell only hours after being married.

Meg Wynn Owen comes into her own in this season after a somewhat stilted start as Hazel Bellamy but again is snidely referred to as "the middle classes who are going to get in everywhere" by a snooty Lady Berkhamstead. We see Hazel demonstrate a true backbone of steel as she dares to question Hudson over his anti-German feeling in "The Beastly Hun" but her tender side when she gives into her emotions in "If you were the Only girl in the World". If you haven't seen any of this season, I shall not make assumptions in the what ifs.

The second episode is perhaps not one of the stronger ones but we do see a change being wrought in the relationship between James and Hazel.

Georgina has her own road to Damascus after staying back to help a canteen and then deciding that she is going to be a nurse. We then see this rackety society girl become a more than competent addition to the VAD's.

The first episode with the Belgian refugees at first seems somewhat far-fetched in that it seems unlikely that a group of Belgian peasants could ever find their way into the Bellamy household but after understanding Mrs Bridges despair, we find ourselves being brought into the experiences of the Belgians' after Georgina returns and helps bridge the language gap.

This was a very enjoyable set which again could help as a social history lesson and I have found my young son asking questions as he is now well aware that this period in history was sad and that war is wrong.

Good acting and strong performances in this helped make our affections for the characters grow that little bit more.
