Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Smaller than ever (just 0.62 inches thick), the new iPod fits comfortably in the palm of your hand and slips easily into your pocket - and your life. At 5.6 ounces, it weighs less than 2 compact discs, and even many mobile phones. And yet the iPod gives you a huge hard drive. Do the maths: that's enough space to store three weeks of music - played continuously, 24/7 - or one new song a day for the next 20 years.Once again, Apple turns the portable digital music player market on its ear with hassle-free functionality and stunning, well-considered design that place iPod far ahead of the curve and the competition. Building on the success of the touch wheel (which made scrolling through an entire music collection quick and easy), the new iPod has been re-engineered with an all-touch interface for enhanced durability and sensitivity. With an LCD screen and buttons that feature a backlight for clear visibility in low-light conditions, iPod is designed for easy one-handed operation. So the best way to take an entire music collection anywhere is now even better. The 15GB and 30GB iPod models come with a dock that makes charging and syncing easier than ever - no more reaching around, looking for the right port. An elegant, convenient home base for iPod on a desk or connected to a home stereo system, the dock provides syncing via FireWire or USB 2.0, charging via FireWire and audio line out for connecting to powered speakers or a stereo system.Designed to give you the best portable digital music experience ever, the iPod delivers the highest sound quality from input to output. iPod supports the most popular audio formats - including MP3 (up to 320 kbps), MP3 Variable Bit Rate (VBR) and WAV - giving you access to a wide range of audio file types. And iPod is the only portable digital music player that supports the AAC format (Mac-only), which features CD-quality audio in smaller file sizes than MP3, so that even more songs fit on your iPod.The iPod now lets you do a whole lot more in addition to maintaining your contacts, calendar and to-do lists. iPod now includes Solitaire, Brick and Parachute, three great games you can play anywhere (a feature you're sure to appreciate the next time you're standing in a queue or waiting for someone). You can even use your own music as the soundtrack to a game.iPod also includes a notes reader that lets you download text-based information and read it on the screen. This way you can have the information you need - on everything from restaurant reviews to nightlife guides, and from news articles to exercise routines - at your fingertips. The iPod features a sleep timer, so you can fall asleep to your music. And with the iPod's new alarm clock, you can choose either an alarm tone or your favorite music to wake you up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ipod - pocket sized jukebox impresses, 24 Jul 2003
I bought the new version of the Ipod as soon as I knew that it was available. Having toyed with the idea of purchasing the previous version I leapt at the chance of buying the new one as soon as possible. Not only was it a better looking item, but the battery life while playing and its longevity as a whole, have been improved, as has its downloads speeds and capacity.

Initially I thought about buying the 10gig version, but going for the 15Gig version have me a very nice carrying case – with belt attachment! – and the desirable cradle which allows for much easier and much more attractive display, and smoother downloads… well I think so anyway. 30Gigs would have given me twice as much storage, but I did think that it would be more space than my present music collection required. And I have not been proved wrong.

The fact that you can fit 15gigs on music onto the Ipod is brilliant for those who already have a well-labelled and well stocked PC-based music collection. But for others, for whom the task of filling the Ipod will first require the filling of their PC with music, the loading of the Ipod may be an onerous one.

Having just recently got a new PC I had this task. Although downloading CDs to my PC takes little time unless I was connected to the internet I had to manually enter every song and album title after each album had been uploaded. Fun this was not. Although the use of Firewire made the synching between PC and Ipod very fast. the task of filling my Ipod stilltook up most of a weekend and added a sizeable fee to my phone bill, but ultimately I have to say it was worth it.

Yes, Ipods are an Apple product, and yes they probably do work a bit better with Itunes than they do with MusicMatch – the media player PC users have to use, but this should not put off any non-Mac users, as this is but a small complaint. The Ipod’s new features, including the above, and the ability to create playlists on the go, play solitaire, and see the screen in the dark are great benefits, making previous models look archaic already.

I have not tested the theory out yet but I estimate that I have a good seven straight days worth of music at my disposal – and packaged in a box that one a design award for its style. My Ipod is the envy of all my friends, but part with it I would not. In the world of MP3 players nothing comes close – maybe in capacity, but in style? No. And will anything ever come closer? Only Ipod v.3 I’ll wager.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its a thing of great beauty......., 3 Jul 2003
Having looked on enviously at friends with the old iPod I now have my own gorgeous, sleak and very sexy 15GB version. What's more it looks about 50 times better than the once sexy older model. So sexy that i find myself giving it a little stroke when its sat in the cradle next to me at work! The blue back lit screen and orange lit control keys all add to a very nice piece of kit.
Navigating your way around is a joy, the touch sensitive scroll wheel and buttons are not too sensitive and a badly trained chimp could find its way around the menu's. I'm trying hard but I can't find a bad thing to say about the iPod, which is most unusual being a fairly critical type!
The great news is that it works on both PC's and Mac's which is great if you use a Mac at work and you've got PC at home like me.
Adding tunes couldn't be easier using the excellent Itunes on a Mac, and the slightly less user friendly (IMO) Musicmatch on a PC. Sound quality is excellent, although the 1st thing to do is get rid of the albeit adequate earphones that come in the box and replace them with some of your own. If you can afford it go for the 15GB version instead of the 10GB, you get the cradle, remote and case - the case is vital as you are gonna be gutted if it gets scratched - and it looks as if it could scratch pretty easily.
15GB holds about 3800 songs, i've been ripping CD's and downloading tracks from Limewire like a demon and i've still not touched the sides! The calendar is also a nice touch, as are the games. If you are in the market for a hard drive MP3 player, pay a bit extra and go for the Ipod - its got form and function in spades, unlike many of the bulky, cheap looking MP3 players around.

5.0 out of 5 stars This should be better than 5 stars! The ipod is amazing., 12 Jul 2003
By Nick Moyler "1mouse1" (Kingston) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
This has to be one of the best mp3 etc. players around. Sure it's made by apple, which can put people off because they have never liked Macs, but the pc version is absolutely fantastic.

It looks absolutely fantastic, with it's sleek design and it's mirror back, and its very small for such a big drive. 15 gigs of space has to be enough for pretty much anyone, I have 6 gigs of mp3 and wma format music on my pc, which is about 4 or 5 days worth. Work out how long the whole 25 gigs will go on for!
On the website it claims to be able to hold about 1.5 weeks worth of music, or 7500 songs, but only with quite low quality - about 64k/sec. As lots of people including myself use 96 or 128k then this amount will drop, but it's still 4 or 5 days solid- more than enough for portable music.
I never put that much on anyway, as flicking through the lists on the ipod takes a while if you have lots of different artists and albums. I tend to put on about a day of my favourite music, which takes me about a week to get through. I really only listen to it while travelling-but I have started to use it a lot more because it's much better than changing CDs every hour or so.
After the end of the week I can just plug it back into the cradle next to my pc, and it updates my song lists automatically. The software that it comes with does tend to be a bit annoying, as I usually use Windows Media Player, but ipod is only compatible with Music-Match Jukebox. You can't drag and drop on My Computer, even though the ipod comes up as another Removable drive. Instead, you can store normal files like documents or videos etc. on the hard drive that cannot be viewed on the ipod's lists. This is useful, because I can keep videos etc. without it coming up on the ipod play list, as I have loads of free space.

The layout of the program is a bit confusing, but after a while you get used to it. The annoying thing is transferring music to the program. It usually makes mistakes when inserting the names of the tracks, making big spaces after artist and track names, which come up on the ipod. This can mean that you apparently have maybe 4 or 5 different names of the same artist.
Besides the niggles, it still works fine after a bit of tuning, and I use it all the time for convenience.

While using the ipod, it's onboard display is amazingly good, considering it's size. The wheel takes a bit of getting used to, and can be a bit unresponsive if you scroll up only one artist, song etc. However, it is incredibly simple to select your music through the series of menus that are customisable to show only what you want to see. For example, I have removed the genre and composer buttons that I don't use from the browse menu (Where you access your music).
When playing, the screen displays the song name, artist and album as well as a very cute bar showing how far you are into the song and how long there is left. Tapping the middle button once allows you to fast-forward through the song with the wheel, and twice lets you set your rating for the song-with 5 stars.

OK, there are a few things that could be better with the ipod. The wheel could be a little responsive and being able to place songs into personal play lists on the ipod would be useful. You have an 'On-The-Go' play list that you can put songs in while you are away from the computer, but once they are in there you cannot remove them. It is only reset when you connect it to the computer, which resets it. You can only make new play lists when connected to the computer, and you cannot edit track names while disconnected either. This is a bit annoying as it means removing the track fro the ipod, renaming it on the software and then putting it back on, when it would be much easier to do it by putting the letters in with the wheel if it is just a small error you didn't notice when it was connected.

Overall, after using it for 2 weeks, I have found that the very few things wrong are FAR outweighed by the shear brilliance that has gone into this little thing. I would recommend it to anyone, and anyone with money should buy it.
