Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Buddha Bar, famous for its customers and sumptuous decor, initiates businessmen and connected young people of Paris to all the new electronic sounds. Claude Challe, the DJ behind the project recalls in this luxury double CD the slackened atmosphere of an already mythical bar. Disc one, Buddha's Dinner is inspired by the Eastern musical universe and invites the listener to concentrate quietly on the good company which surrounds them. Disc two, Buddha's Party pushes the guests between the tables and even towards the dance floor on a vibe more reminiscent of Faithless, Kevin Yost or the excellent Anima Sound System. These two-and-a-half hours of planning and light music will leave any listener with more than a taste of happiness. --Gabriel Masurel

5.0 out of 5 stars Still the best of the series!, 17 May 2004
By D. D. Wilson "spawnee" (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I now have all six of the current Buddha Bar CD's, but this is the one that I still play the most! Although it is not my favourite Claude Challe CD, it is still the greatest in this series (however, I do agree with some of the other reviewers that the third in the series is also an excellent choice, but this just pips it to the post as my first choice). For those of you unfamiliar with the Buddha Bar Cd's, they are from the club/resturant of the same name in Paris. The music is influenced with world fusion/beats mixed with true Balearic Island sounds, (not the overly comericalised stuff that gets churned out every year by certain clubs and labels)! Personal favourites on the CD include, Theme from Shaft - Malik Adouane, who would of thought that the Issac Hayes track could sound so Arabic? Piya Re Piya Re always brings a smile on my face as well, very uplifting in a mellow way!

4.0 out of 5 stars The First Entry of the Buddha-Bar Series., 15 May 2004
By Burjiz (Schaffhausen, Switzerland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This is the debut entry of the "Buddha-Bar" series, and considering that it was released back in 1999, the material still sounds remarkably fresh. A co-worker of mine recommended the Buddha-Bar series since she knows I'm really into downtempo music with a touch of Eastern flavor. When I approached this set, the first thing that grabbed me was the rather steep pricetag, which seems to be putting off quite a few listeners. But the deal is this: "Buddha-Bar" is recommended depending on who you are. If you're a casual listener who buys maybe 3-5 CDs a year, then this may not be a wise purchase. However, if you're a music lover who has an extensive and diverse range of genres in your collection, then I don't see how forking out the extra cash should be that big a deal. The fact is: the material on this album is very good. In this handsomely-packaged collection, we have two discs: "Buddha's Dinner" and "Buddha's Party." The stronger of these two discs is definitely the "Dinner" one, which has mellowed-out tracks that really give off a sense of calm. My favorite track has to be the lovely "What Will I Be" by Zeave Ben. It's one of those tunes that stayed imprinted in my head because the song is so distinct and beautifully arranged. The "Party" disc has slightly less of an Eastern vibe, but has a fair amount of really good dance tunes that are decent enough for any party. The main attractions here are the Eurodisco bounce of So Emotional, who does a cover of the hit "All By Myself" as well as Byron Stingily's "Flying High," which gets a Brazilian makeover by DJs Masters at Work. While not quite flawless, I'm overall pleased with "Buddha-Bar," and I hope to explore other volumes of this fine series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Dinner, boring Party, 30 Jan 2004
By Jan W. H. Schnupp (Oxford, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This compilation comes with 2 CDs, one entitled "Dinner", the other "Party". The "Dinner" part is a mellow, interesting and deeply enjoyable collection of musical morsels, with interesting juxatpositions of latin and arabic influences. In sharp contrast, the "Party" CD is really rather boring and monotonous, a bit like techno, but lacking in adrenaline (as well as melodic interest). Given that only one of the 2 CDs really cuts any ice, I found Buddah Bar I a bit on the pricy side. My recommendation: get Buddha Bar III instead. Another 2 CD collection in a similar vein, but this time both CDs are really excellent.
