    I've been tinkering with music software for years and have hitched my wagon to a few different stars along the way. This version of Home Studio is far and away the best system I've found yet.

    I play the keyboard so recording in MIDI is easy, and the built-in synth will play back any instrument. I can then let other, more talented people record in their voices or instruments to get a really nice sounding song together that I can burn onto a CD to play in my car! There's proper notation that can be printed out (I don't read music myself, but I'm told that it's pretty good), you can add effects like reverb to vocals or guitars or whatever.

    The audio looping is particularly cool. Get a drumbeat or bassline and you can just loop it over 8 or 12 or 40 bars just by dragging its edge. Then if you decide your track needs to be faster or slower you just change the tempo and the drum changes tempo without changing pitch (audio changes tempo - how clever is that?).

    This is brilliant software. Smart but easy to figure out. If you use Windows software already you'll find you know where things are going to be and how the keyboard shortcuts work. It's also very musical. If you've used a portastudio you'll know how the mixer works, for example.

    If you want to start making music with your PC this is definitely for you. Also if your kids are studying music, I'm sure this would be a real boon.

    I bought the product to extend my home recording from my 4-track tape deck onto the PC. Each time I have tried to use it I have given up in complete frustration. It is not intuitive at all, for me anyway, and probably suffers from having too many features which confuse a novice like me. I have given up after trying to import 4 tracks, trim and basically edit them, then put them together. It should have been easy, but it defeated me, and I am no dummy - I have spent most of my working life in software.

    It came with Fruity Loops, and that defeated me too.
