I've listened to quite a few of these romantic piano concertos which fell into oblivion, some because they simply weren't especially memorable or remarkable in any way but others unaccountably so. Scharwenka's 3rd definitely belongs in the latter category. I decided to sample it after being smitten with his 4th and immediately I knew this was going to be my favourite of all those forgotten late romantic concertos. All three movements are instantly memorable from the grandiose first movement, through the meltingly beautiful second movement right into the third which has a swooning romantic melody to die for. The 2nd piano concerto doesn't quite measure up to the 3rd or 4th but is still most enjoyable. Excellent performances and recording. This is one disc I'd like to have on my desert island.
