Product Description

Product Description
The brutal and spectacular gladiator battles of the ancient world serve as inspiration for Gladius, a turn-based action role-playing game from LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC. Gladius follows the grand saga of two young heroes, Ursula and Valens, as they recruit and train a team of warriors to contend in the fiercely competitive gladiator games. The game supports both single and multi-player modes.

At the heart of Gladius is a unique mix of dynamic game play that requires players to develop and manage a school of gladiators who, over time, gain experience, learn new skills, improve their abilities and finally test their might in epic battles. Players fight with deadly weapons and powerful magic, learn vital combat tactics, and enhance and customise characters.

The overall scope of Gladius offers an estimated 36 hours of play in each of the game's two story lines, which take players on a challenging journey across four diverse geographical regions. Each land contains a variety of warriors that players must recruit and train. Battles occur throughout the game's 20 arenas and 12 other locations. Players control a school of gladiators that can come from 16 unique classes, including the powerful Imperial Legionary; the witches of the Galdr class, who can sing magical songs and chants; and the javelin throwing Peltast class.

In all, the game offers more than 100 customisable character types, hundreds of skills, and over 400 unique weapons, helmets, shields, and other accessories with which to equip warriors.

In Gladius players may choose to take on the role of Ursula or Valens. Ursula and Valens join forces and travel across many lands, competing in gladiator tournaments where they recruit a variety of warriors. They also become immersed in the evil plot to revive the dark god. Once this wicked plan is put into action, the gladiator games cease and the small band of fighters go on a challenging quest to solve the mystery of the dark god and defeat those who would bring him back to the land of the living. Gladius features a story mode as well as exhibition battles against computer-controlled opponents or up to four players in cooperative mode.

4.0 out of 5 stars glatiator-tastic, 11 Jun 2004
getting a bit fed up of FPS's and sports sims on my PS2 i decided to buy a couple of stratey games to inject a bit of longevity into my games collection and having bought Gladius i have to say that this game is great. Weeks later and im still leading my school of gladiators around the Roman Empire-esque world trying to win those certificates and get to the high tournament at Caltha. As you would expect from Lucasarts the story line is well thought out and the graphics and sound pretty good ut it is the gameplay that is the winner. After a character has been in your school for a while you really care how they do and you soon develop (along with the crowds) your favourites. There are loads of different character classes to choose from and as such gamplay is varied and never dull. It is an easy game to play but difficult to master with alot of thought needed before making any moves, its a bit like battlechess crossed with Dungeons & dragons type thing (but dont let this put you off its not as nerdy as that)
If you want a game to get immersed in then i strongly recommend Gladius, you wont be dissapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Those who are about to die salute you!, 17 Mar 2004
I wandered into the local games store in town with a copy of Spiderman and The Sims, willing to trade them in for a game I could get my teeth really stuck into. Manhunt was great and provided the variety I needed, but I'd beaten it too recently to stick it on "hardcore". In GTA VC, I'd found 98 packages and given up trying to find any more. Now, having absently borrowed "Kessen", I'd a taste for the strategy again. I wanted to lead characters into battle and laugh at their pitiful attempts to scratch my soldiers as I crushed them underfoot in my advances. (Told you I'd a taste for it).

Flicking through the items on the 2 for £30 range, I found this title. Having only recently watched "Gladiator" on tape a few weeks ago, I was intrigued, but wary, thinking this was a title that was cheap for a reason. Doing some research online, I found out that there was a general thumbs up for the game. I headed back to the store, traded in my old titles, and picked up a shiny new copy of Gladius.

The game is designed by LucasArts, and as anyone would know, this means a lot of money and maybe an original idea is involved. The money shows, as this game is polished and shinier than a new 10p. As for the original idea, however...Well, lets just say a lot of ideas were cooked together.

The game plays similar to Summoner, as your characters begin to cuild up a school of gladiators by travelling around a HUGE map, fighting in small-town arenas to get certificates and prizes. In each town, you have the option of recruiting local mercenaries for a temporary match, or permanently enrolling them in the school. If they're permanently enrolled, the new character develops experience and can gain a huge amount of different skills to learn and specialize in.

Combat is turn based, which means that the characters take it in turns to move within the arena, taking advantage of number of allies they have and height of landscape they stand on. The order is determined by that old chestnut called the "Initiative" skill. The characters available are varied enough to allow for a range of different strategies, only sometimes restricted by the competition rules within the town. For example, magic users may be forbidden, or 'morphers (Some characters can morph into Jungle Cats, Wolves or Bears).

In all, I've found what I was looking for, a game with depth and enough variety and options for me to be able to spend a full weekend playing without seeing the ending sequence. I like a challenge! If you're looking for something you'd like to commit yourself to, a change from the 3 hour arcade games on the market, give this game a try. You might be suprised.

Gladius is really cool .Its graphics are as good as they need to be.The gameplay is brilliant pitching you and your team in multiple leagues and battles. You can buy gladiators or hire them also you can shop for items and sell items. The multiplayer on gladius is also cool you can play on co-operative and versus.Gladius is NOT a beat 'em up game there is a lot more to do like talk to people to obtain imoportant information it is also part of a stratergy game as you plan your gladiators movement and can buy combo' attacks and upgrades for them with job points that your get when they kill another gladiator.I think that you should definitely buy gladius as it is worth the amount of money that it is.
