Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Magnet is a flag of convenience for Scotland-based singer-songwriter Even Johansen. Prior to the release of On Your Side, he had teased expectation with a series of sporadically tremendous EPs which, while never quite sufficient to warrant the dispatch of quantities of gold, frankincense and myrrh, signalled that an intriguing new talent was blossoming. The comparisons of Johansen's singing to Radiohead's Thom Yorke, and his songwriting and arranging to Air, were not mere empty hyperbole.

On Your Side is not a classic--like most debuts, it never quite transcends its influences--but it is an accomplished and intelligent record. The duet with Gemma Hayes on a version of Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay" seems a rather obvious and clumsy bid for attention, but it is forgivable if it propels more people towards the rest of On Your Side. All of it is at the very least mournfully pretty, and the more ambitious tracks, among them the gorgeous, lugubrious ballads "Nothing Hurts Now" and "I'll Come Along", recall not only the sombre moments of Radiohead but the panoramic Brian Eno-inspired sweep of U2 circa The Unforgettable Fire. --Andrew Mueller

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Album!, 23 Oct 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: On Your Side (Audio CD)
Bought this album whilst travelling in Norway, and I must say it is absolutely magnificent. Calming, relaxing and very autumnal. The music is mainly guitarbased, and the voice of singer/songwriter Even Johansen will make your hair stand on end!
There is even a rendition of 'Lay Lady Lay' with the amazing Gemma Hayes, which must be classed as potentially the best Bob Dylan cover ever!!
Buy this album, make yourself a nice cuppa, sit down in front of a roaring fire and let that autumn blues drift away...

5.0 out of 5 stars Music lover....., 30 Dec 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: On Your Side (Audio CD)
I first saw Magnet as a support act for Beautiful South Nov 03, what a shame this guy is not as well known as he deserves to be. The On your side cd is a complete and utter sensation, treading new ground, I have since bought the EP's & import, Melodic, soul searching, haunting tunes that just frazzle the inner self and spin around the head. For weeks I have been singing/humming this cd, my friends think I have gone mad. This guy has the haunting voice hallmark of early slow songed Thom Yorke, but with more emotion, I have never heard such a debut cd of this quality and brilliance, please hurry to record another fabulous piece of work, I need more Magnet tunes to sing in my head. thanks for reading I hope you enjoy the cd as much as I have.....Bo Selecta, I tell thee?

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite album of all time! (honest), 8 Jun 2005

This review is from: On Your Side (Audio CD)
My favourite album of all time! (yes, really - and I do know what I'm talking about). Certainly one of the classiest, most beautiful albums you will ever hear. It's shameful that most people have never even heard of him (maybe he needs a new manager or something?)The new album 'The Tourniquet'- which is out now in Norway, by the way - is excellent compared to everything else out there, but nowhere near as good as his masterpiece 'On Your Side', which, let's face it, will be impossible to improve upon.
