Synopsis

In this French thriller from Francois Ozon, Alice (Natacha Regnier) and her boyfriend Luc (Jeremie Renier) find themselves in a terrifying trap when they sneak out into the woods to cover up a crime they committed together, and then cannot find their way back out. Compared to THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT and to SHALLOW GRAVE, the tale is creepy and twisting, involving rape, murder, burying dead bodies, and perhaps the worst of all: getting lost in the woods.

A manipulative and self-centred young woman entices young men. When one of her admirers wants more than she wishes to give she uses her charms to seduce a naive young man - and fellow student - to commit murder.

On the run the curious young man (superbly played by Belgian Renier) is given the chance to explore, more deeply than he imagined possible, the reasons for his previous inability to consummate his relationship with our erstwhile 'heroine'.

A seductive piece of European cinema - but only for the open-minded or curious maybe. Some atmospheric forest shots and some very friendly rats...

There are 'deux denouments' - when most films have only one!

A French film definitely not for the squeamish, this is a story of a gullible teenager spurred on to carry out a brutal revenge murder on behalf of his girlfriend who is way out of control and not telling the truth. Natacha Regnier and Jeremie Renier give fine performances and the whole film is extremely atmospheric. The widescreen picture quality is fine, as is the surround sound and the subtitles are clear and sensible. After the couple become lost in the woods, the story takes a Hansel and Gretel turn - but it's not a wicked witch they encounter.

Well worth viewing if you like a dark, creepy atmosphere.
