This is a big CD in the history of Spock's Beard. It's their first since lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Neal Morse left the band last year after the release of their double CD "Snow". Drummer Nick D'Virgilio (NDV)has taken over the lead vocalist role - he still handles drums on the CD but will be out front when they tour Europe later this year. That's the history but what about the CD?

It's different. On first play I thought "It's not Spock's Beard" NDV seems to have changed his vocal style to sound more like Neal. NDV has a fantastic voice and I would have liked to hear him sing as he does on the old CDs.

I'm now playing it for the 6th time (yes, I like it a lot now) and the stand out tracks for me are "Shining Star" very laid back, my wife even asking if this was a solo track by one of the Eagles, "East of Eden - West of Memphis" nice keyboard solo by Ryo Okumoto and great lead guitar work by Al Morse who seems to have a fatter/fuller sound (not sure I've described this properly)"A Guy Named Sid" is a 5 part epic coming in around 20 minutes - Actually, it's not fair to pick any of these tracks as highlights; they're all great. You really need to check this out. Neal Morse was an enormous influence on the band but I think this CD proves they can cut it without him. Can't wait until October 22 when they play the Mean Fiddler in London.

First album after Neal Morse left, AND followup to the amazing Snow, this album has a lot to live up to. I don't mind admitting I was a bit disappointed to begin with. It doesn't grab as instantly as the likes of V and Snow, but it does improve on repeated listening. There's some catchy stuff on there, and although some of it doesn't sound like traditional Beard, think of it as the band finding their feet after Neal's departure - listening to Octane and their self-titled album released since this will show you that they are certainly back to the top of their game without Neal. Shining Star is a particular favourite of mine.

I am sorry but this is contrived to the point that they were so trying to sound like someone they could not sound like. This album is a real disappointment and has pretty much put me off post Neal Spocks.

Weak song writing, and poor lyrics, a manufactured opus does not serve the prog cause well at all.
