Amazon.co.uk Review
The Un-Calculated Some, the debut from three-piece Un-cut, is a classy hark-back to the golden age of acid jazz. Opening track and lead single "Midnight" has all the soul power of a
Galliano live show but with a thick drum & bass backbone and horn breaks for extra oomph in the chorus. "Skin II Skin" has much of the same energy but is carried along by a northern soul groove rather than an all-powering drum loop. Aside from drum & bass party tunes, there's a host of downtempo vocal songs like the second single "Falling". However, like a lot of the album this sounds fresh and uplifting but not necessarily different or original.
The Un-Calculated Some will not win awards for ingenuity or pushing back the boundaries, but that doesn't seem to be its purpose. Un-cut are about good, honest party tunes that could delight anyone on a balmy summer's evening. --
