"Anyone after a realistic adaptation of [basketball] will find it here. 85%."

Manufacturer's Description

Step up your game with NBA Live 2004. With brand-new 10-Man Freestyle, authentic gameplay, and stunning graphics, NBA Live 2004 delivers the definitive basketball experience. Whether running the point with one-button Quick Plays, spinning free in the lane for a vicious dunk, or locking down on "D," NBA Live 2004 puts players in total control. With a dramatically enhanced Dynasty Mode, the ability to take the court at all NBA arenas, and all-new commentary from Marv Albert and Mike Fratello, NBA Live 2004 is all about authenticity.

Thanks to extensive motion-capture sessions using ten players in real game situations, the NBA Live 2004 team have captured lifelike positioning, technique, and movement for each player on the court for use with 10-Man Freestyle. The motion-capture data allowed designers to build individual players from the ground up, as single data points morphed into wire-frame figures, which were then shaded and textured to produce amazing player reproductions The result is a fluid, seamless reproduction of life on a real basketball court, where all 10 players work both independently and in conjunction with each other to produce dynamic and intelligent offensive and defensive play.

Recruit the top free agents and import your top college players to build a powerhouse dynasty in a revamped Dynasty Mode. Run your franchise your way and build the perennial NBA champion.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Closest To The Real Thing You Can Get!, 21 Feb 2004
By no1filmaddict (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I am not a fan of basketball, i would not really buy a basketball game, however i went to rent a game out from my local games store, and as there was nothing else worth renting, i decided that i would give this a go, and see wether it was any good or not.

To my suprise, i found that it was not a bad game and i was soon really getting into it. Maybe because i had never really played any game like this before, it was even more exciting for me, but to be honest, i can't really imagine how anyone could not like it, or give it a bad review. Unfortunately i have never played NBA Live 2003 or any other basketball games, so i can't compare them, but i'm sure that NBA Live 2004 can only be an improvement, even if it is a small one.

The graphics, although they are not amazing, and no where near as good as they could be, they aren't bad, and certainly nothing to be sniffed at. The gameplay is generally quite enjoyable, and while it can get slightly repetative after a few days of playing it, basketball fans i'm sure will love it.

As will all 'EA Sports' games you are able to create a players for your team, and although there are not many options and changes that you can make to them, it can be quite fun all the same. To be honest, i don't know why they can't just have hundreds of different heads and bodies, etc etc so that there is plenty to chose from, because after you have made one or two players, the novilty of creating your very own person, soon wears off.

I don't know wether it's just because i have never played anything like this before but i personally found the controls a little tricky, and it was very hard to get past the oponents in order to score a goal. When it came to picking a player to say tackle the opponent with, i took ages, because you have press L2 and then either the X, O , triangle or square button depending on who you want to use. I found that by the time i had done this, the oposition had gone past my defences, and got a 'slam-dunk'. i on;y had the game for two nights, and i probably only played it for a few hours in total, so i'm sure with bit of practice you will be able to get round the problem, if you had that problem at all.

Overall though, NBA Live 2004 is not a bad and certainly if you are a basketall fan yourself, will be very fun and entertaining. I'm not sure what it is, but i personally found this game veru addictive. I think that it was probably that i wasn't much good, and so the challenge of trying to beat the CPU, was quite thrilling. However, lets hope that you are better than me. If you are a fan of basketball, this is the closest thing you will get on any game, to real life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very realistic!, 14 May 2004
This is quite possibly the most addictive game I have bought. It's sad to say but I have lost whole nights to this game. It is very competitive (on the harder settings) and it makes a great 2 player game. Don't be put off by the controls in the manual (So many buttons, do so many things, if you are an old dog like me) they are actually really easy to pick up and so soon get into the moves and are able to do some pretty cool and realistic steps. I haven't played an NBA game since Live 1995 on the PSOne and it is a great choice I made to get this one to pick it up again. Well worth buying (especially if you are like me and you are really disappointed with the UK's TV coverage of the of the NBA Season and the play off finals! 2 games a week! What's up with that! Go Pistons!).

4.0 out of 5 stars A great game, but...., 24 Dec 2003
2003 was good, this one is even better. The gameplay has improved, and this is especially noticable in the defensive play, for you as well as for the computer. It won't be easy getting passed the cpu team, but you can make it as difficult for them as the computer makes it for you. Other improvements are for instance the real time injuries, with limping players and caring teammembers. The Dynasty mode is also good which includes all new Training sessions.
But there's a downside for all you creative people. Despite the tons of gear, the variety of creating a player is limited. Where as in 2003 you could have name your player johnson or smith and it would be recognized, in 2004 you are stuck with nr 14 or 35 or the standard nicknames like ATM and Smoove, no new nicknames have been added. Also shaping its head has been removed and the tattoos look like some sort of grease spot. But eventually it's all about the gameplay, and despite my minor disappointment about the custom player creation, it's still a great game to play. Oh one more thing that guy from the Netherlands F. Elson is not in the game, and dat zuigt! pardon my Dutch.
