Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
On her remarkable debut, Revival, Gillian Welch sang of men and women who were intimately tied to others, even as they mourned dead children or lost homes. Hell Among the Yearlings finds Welch in even darker territory. In this world, loss can't be assuaged by human connection because there is none: morphine junkies, dying hobos, and alienated workers stand utterly alone in a sparse landscape where hope comes, if at all, in merely surviving. For example, the woman who kills her rapist or the singer who unconvincingly declares her troubles have flown because "Winter's Come and Gone". Appropriately, Welch's stunning voice goes it alone, surrounded by little more than her own banjo and the spare old- time and country-blues guitar of partner David Rawlings. --David Cantwell

CD Description
Gillian Welch lends her wise-beyond-her-years sensibility to a further exploration of the traditional music of early 20th century Appalachia, returning to the territory of 1996's REVIVAL. With the exception of the up-tempo, rockabilly-influenced "Honey Now", the songs on HELL AMONG THE YEARLINGS sound so old-timey as to seem almost archival. T-Bone Burnett returns as producer, again making restraint and austerity work well with Welch's starkly beautiful songs, like the melancholic "My Morphine" and the desolate tragedy "One Morning",narrated with quiet poignancy by a dying man's mother. Welch's voice itself, harmonising with acoustic guitars and banjo, has a gentle, twangy simplicity which speaks of another age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting, intimate, spare and essential: should be in print., 18 Aug 2000
By A Customer
It's difficult to see why Almo Records have let this one go out of print, unless they're planning to re-release it with her first album 'Revival' as a double-album. You should own both if you like this school of music. Gillian Welch is a trained musician, who met her partner-in-music guitar player David Rawlings on the course. Together they make an affectingly truthful version of country music, which is true to tradition without being museum-bound. The songwriting is first-class, and (unsurprisingly) the musicianship complements and serves the work skilfully without advertising itself. Opener 'Caleb Meyer' is the most catchy track: a very distinctive take on the 'murder ballad' tradition. In truth, all the songs are strong, from 'In A Hole' (featuring what Welch described as her attempt to write the 'dumbest chorus possible') to the rockabilly raunch of 'Honey Now' (done and dusted in under 2 minutes - no shame in the odd quickie). There is enough range and quality here to hold the attention. There is very little sugar on Gillian Welch's music. If you 'don't do bleak', you will not enjoy this (but if you don't, chances are you won't be in this bit of the website). There is a strong quality to the music and an intensity (as with the best country) which winds up somewhere between spiritual and devotional. If I've made it sound like a hard listen, I've done it no favours: it isn't. She and David Rawlings are also unbelievably good live. Try it (when they re-issue it). You shouldn't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars possiblity her best album, 13 May 2002
By A Customer
I have been familiar with Gillian Welch's other CDs but for some reason I put off buying this one for quite a while. After listening to it, I wondered why I took so long

I think this her best album to date, more cohesive than the wonderful Revival and yet more upbeat than the later Time. Not that I would give either of those CDs less than four/five stars

I'd recommend Gillian Welch to anyone who is interested in serious music

4.0 out of 5 stars brittle and sublime, 17 Mar 2002
By A Customer
I first heard Gillian Welch by accident - on Radio 4's 'Desert Island Discs'. Author Kazuo Ishiguro (Remains of the Day) picked out 'I'm not afraid to Die' from this album; one of the stand-out tracks.

If you appreciate subtle, melodic and melancholy music you will definitely love this album. The arrangements are never sentimental and over-produced, which must be tempting given the commercial potential in Welch's wonderful singing voice. My absolute favourite track is 'My Morphine', which manages to contain a yodelling chorus that somehow manages to sound contemporary and beautiful. Even if you don't see yourself as a country fan, you'll love this if you have got ears for good songwriting and are open to acoustic music.
