5.0 out of 5 stars Unoriginal name but highly original material, 9 Jul 2003
Page 2 into the linear notes and i can see that they were short of imagination for the name of this compilation and the lack of bands like pooh sticks, talking heads, cure, radio 4,crass,fire engines, this heat etc but it is only post-punk 1, so more is too come.

It starts with an absolute classic from one of the most innovative bands of the last...well ever. After 2 listens i was worryingly singing along madly to I found that essence rare by the gang of four.

A good start then, the rest of the compilation is a mixture of catchy, punky material and more lo-fi,experimental songs from the early 80s - and in some cases, modern bands like the rapture and futureheads (whom already sound out of date compared to their predecessors).

This compilation has so many great moments, from the political 'We Are All Prostitutes' by the Pop Group and the always different Swell Maps with one of their classics 'Another Song' to pure love (or unloved) of different kinds such as 'Searching For Mr Right' by the Young Marble Giants(One of my personal favourite bands) and 'I, Bloodbrother Be' by Shockhead Peters there is something for all the purists and self indulgant music lovers.

And who can complain with the always brilliant bands like the Slits, LiliPUT, ESG, Wire, Au Pairs, Scritti Politti, XTC and, of course, my fave's The Fall accompanying more obscure bands like Les Georges Leningrad and Blurt.

Along with additional linear notes about the compilers opinions of the songs they put on, its an almost perfect selection which sits nicely on my shelf next to all the other rough trade compilations. Heres hoping all those '02' compilations are just as tastefull.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rough Trade Shops - Post Punk Vol.1, 20 April 2004
By A Customer
If you like your music varied, Rough Trade compilations are always thebest places to visit. Not only do they offer value for money (44 tracksover 2 CDs), but they invariably contain hidden gems, obscure curios, andrarely-known early tunes from bands we've grown to know and love over theyears.
Standout tracks are numerous - Gang of Four's "I Found That Essence Rare"which, along with Wire's "Ex Lion Tamer", sounds like it could have beenrecorded this year or last; The Rapture's, screamy, bumpy-yet-funky "OutOf The Races And On To The Tracks"; Delta 5's girl-attitude "Mind Your OwnBusiness"; Life Without Buildings' 'The Leanover' featuring Sue Tompkins'sung/spoken vocals over Dawson's Creek-esque background music; my personalfavourite - Scritti Politti's minimalist 'Skank Block Bologna'; FlyingLizards' cheeky version of James Brown's 'Sex Machine'; all-girl band TheRaincoats' version of The Kink's "Lola"; and Shockheaded Peters'jazz-tinged ode to boy-love 'I, Bloodbrother Be' (£4,000 Love Letter)which you'll soon find yourself humming along to.
As with Rough Trade's 'Electronic 01' I found this compilation containedmore hits than misses, and eagerly await 'Post Punk Vol.2' with inclusionof the likes of Joy Division and Radio 4 (as mentioned by previousreviewers).

3.0 out of 5 stars Some good rare gems hining away here, 12 Jan 2004
By A Customer
Quite simply, I purchased this album to get hold of Asbestos Lead Asbestos by World Domination Enterprises. I owned the vinyl version many years ago, and thought I would never again own that tiny part of record history.

I believe that a lot of the tracks you find on this album can not be found elsewhere, so just for the rareness of the material on this album it is worth owning.

There are many differing styles, so I'm sure my favourites or hated tracks would not be of much interest to people who purchase this for reasons other than mine.

All I can say is this is not a great album, but there are enough gems hidden away in this collection to make it worth owning.

I doubt anyone will like everything on this album, but the next time you are sitting at home thinking to yourself "It's years since I've listed to Asbestos Lead Asbestos", you can dig out this CD and remind yourself of your youth, when you had "World Domination Enterprises" scribbled on your college bag and only those in the know had any idea what it meant!
