5.0 out of 5 stars Complete and Excellent, 16 Dec 2005
By J. Drayton (Brisbane, QLD Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I don't understand why reviewers are saying this doesn't include the song "A Salty Dog". I'm sitting here listening to it on this set as I type. As for "Long Gone Geek", it was never on the original album.

This is brilliant value and a great way to get these essential albums. The (re?)mastering is done splendidly.

One (minor) gripe: I'd have like larger reproductions of the original cover art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value, 23 Aug 2005
By A Customer
I bought this because I remember liking A Salty Dog years ago. Contrary to what some other reviewers say it does have the title track even if it is not listed on the Amazon tracklist. Maybe they haven't actually bought it? Also the Long Gone Geek track was not part of the original album so it's no loss to me. Four good albums for under a tenner is brilliant value if you like this band.

4.0 out of 5 stars Do you want a cup of tea, Withnail?, 8 Aug 2003
This 2CD set offers extraordinary value for money. Whilst there is no mention on the packaging of the material having been remastered, this set offers a clean reproduction of four albums with what one can only describe as 'lo-fi' production values from one of the earliest prog bands (or an influential pre-prog band, depending on which side you stand in this particular argument). Hearing Robin Trower's creative lead breaks are worth the price of admission alone, but Gary Brooker's soulful vocals and Matthew Fisher's swirling Hammond lines were the real foundations upon which the early Procol Harum sound was built.

I'll mark this down a star for some of the more self-indulgent late 60s excrescences you will encounter which are now verging on the unlistenable (the lengthy spoken word introduction to the side-long 'In Held Twas In I' being a case in point, but persevere, it improves!), but with this much material to choose from, you will not struggle to find something to merit your purchasing this set.

Music historians should disregard the disingenuous promise of finding 'extensive sleevenotes' inside -- 4 pages does not merit such a description. It is the music that counts, of course, and this quartet of classic albums are presented in their entirety, but -- caveat emptor -- 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' does not feature on any of them. Why not buy the _Withnail and I_ DVD instead and enjoy the jazzy sax version of this piece that the film begins with?
