4.0 out of 5 stars If you want 3d then look no further..., 19 Jul 2003
By A Customer
Lightwave offers everything you need to create stunning industry standard 3d artwork and animation. Yes there is a learning curve but compared to the other 3d software I use at work it's alot more user friendly. Well laid out interfaces (which are customisable) and a massive online community that is always ready to offer advice and help means that you don't stay stuck for long. Of all the 3d software I've used I have to say Lightwave has the best modelling tools of the lot - no matter what the intended file format my models always start life in Lightwave. The majority of modelling tools are pretty self-explanatory and fully interactive which gives the user a more 'hands on' experience which I found useful when modelling. True Subdivision surfaces allow the user to create beautiful organics models easily. The renderer is possibly the best 'out of the box' renderer you'll find - providing depth of field, radiosity, caustics, refractions and VIPER (gives a quick preview of any texture changes you make). I only have 2 gripes to make about this software though -
1, I find the character animation tools in need of an update. Whilst they are capable I find it more difficult to rig a character in Lightwave than I do in 3dsmax (which is what I've been using at work for the past 4 years).
2, There isn't a help file as such - you get a hardcopy manual and a pdf on the CD. This is a bit of a let down and the main reason I gave it 4 stars. When you look at the other 3d software on the market you'll notice that they all come with massive help files and tutorials to ease you in to the software. Not so with lightwave, you get a manual that gives an explanation of each tool which isn't really enough. If you are to by this product get a copy of Inside Lightwave 7 by Dan Ablan - it helped me no end when I first started using LW!

Apart from this I'd recommend LW to anyone who is either in search of a new 3d program or looking to break into 3d.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lightwave 7.5, 25 Jul 2003
By A Customer
I found Lightwave 7.5 a great improvement from previous editions. It now runs quicker, smoother and gives a great finish. Tools are now even more accurate and easier to use as well as having some great new additions.
Altogether easier to use with much more realistic results, more models and effects and less rendering time.

I've been a LightWave user for more than ten years and 7.5 is a superb release, only to be bettered by the forthcoming LightWave 8.0! :)
