DVD Description

Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was vilified when authorities discovered he murdered, dismembered and tried to consume the bodies of 17 young men in Milwaukee. Taking you into the demented world of this lonely factory worker and examining the ways his personal pains led to the most destructive extremes of human cruelty.

Synopsis

One of the most notorious serial killers in America was Wisconsin's Jeffrey Dahmer. Dahmer's exploits included killing 15 boys and resorting to cannibalism on their corpses. This biographical drama starring Jeremy Renner (TV's ZOE, DUNCAN, JACK & JANE) does not focus on the grisly details of the murders, rather it sets out to comprehend an alienated man who struggles with his own sexuality until driven disturbingly over his head. Writer/director David Jacobson has constructed a film very much in contrast to other Dahmer portrayals in its compassion for the deranged mind. The film uses flashbacks and very few characters to give a history of the serial killer's upbringing and details as to what drove him over the edge. The masterful use of time and a strong cast were additional tools Jabobson used to elevate this horrific drama. Featuring Bruce Davison and Artel Kayaru.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing, 30 Dec 2003
Being interested by the whole subject of serial killers, and a fan of serial killer movies and good movies as a whole I was looking forward to settling down to a gripping film documenting the life and gruesome activities of Dahmer, who I knew a bit about from books I had read. Unfortunately, this film doesn't seem to know what it wants to be from the word go and ends up basically as a snapshot of a short period in Dahmer's life. Because of this the movie seems to have no beginning, middle or end and, ultimately, is boring. I couldn't believe it when the final titles rolled. People who know nothing about Dahmer before watching the movie will still know nothing afterwards. This could have been much better. Don't waste your money on it. In fact, having also watched 'Gacy', 'Bundy' (the best of the lot) and 'Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer' recently, I would suggest that if you are genuinely interested in the subject of serial killers then you should read about them, not watch these poorly made films.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tasty little film, 25 Mar 2007
By Wrench (England) - See all my reviews
Very underrated movie portraying the twisted mind of one of the most sickest human beings known to the modern world, Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer.

The story is told through a series of flashbacks during Jeffrey's last day's on the loose as he attempts to drug and snare what would have been his last victim and which would lead to Damher's eventual arrest. Jeremy Renner, who plays the part of "Jeffrey Dahmer", is really quite brilliant in his look and portrayal of Dahmer and brings out his evil, frustrated and depraved feelings very convincingly making him believable and loathsome, yet it give's you a sense of sorrow seeing him tourtured by his troubled mind. Supporting cast are general unknown's but also act extremely well throughout.

The movie is made on a very low budget, but has been very well put together and edited making it always interesting. It can come across as being quite slow paced if you come into this expecting to see a gross-out bloodbath. The gore and murders, though some are shown, are on the whole neglected in favour of giving the audience more character analysis of Dahmer's inner thoughts. It is still uneasy and shocking viewing at times, just not as full on as the "Ted Bundy" movie that was released the same year.

Overall it's an exellent and fascinating little film that punches well above it's weight. Just don't expect it to be as shocking as you think it might. Well worth a look.
