Synopsis
Sergio Leone, famous for his "spaghetti westerns," directed this humorous tale about an apolitical peasant bandit (Rod Steiger) plotting a bank job who meets an explosives expert (James Coburn) haunted by memories of his participation in the Irish Rebellion. 4.0 out of 5 stars once upon a time .....the revolution!, 25 Sep 2003
A lesser known constituent of famed director Sergio Leone’s stable, A Fistful of Dynamite takes place during the Mexican revolution of 1913.

Sean Mallory (James Coburn) is a fugitive Irishman with more than a passing talent for explosives who is on the run from the troubles of Ireland and his past. He encounters Juan, a Mexican peasant, played by Rod Steiger. Steiger’s Juan convinces Sean to take part in robbing a bank, ostensibly to relieve it of its loot. Action and revolutionary politics entwine in a western that is certainly as enjoyable as Leone’s earlier films.

At times and especially in the first third of the film it contains numerous comic moments. However in the later stages, the film rations these, divesting itself of some of the earlier humor when dealing with topics such as class struggle, political prisoners, and governmental brutality. Naturally, the movie contains most of Leone’s trademarks, fast zooms, screen filling close-ups, and long elegiac shots matched with another of Ennio Morricone’s unique and masterful scores.
The DVD print looks great on my Tele so I’m sure it’d look truly excellent on a decent one!

5.0 out of 5 stars An eccentric gem, 9 Jan 2004
By C. Gordon (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After the controlled and epic eye of Once Upon a Time in the West, Serge Leone's next personal attack was at all things revolutionary in A Fistful of Dynamite. Made with the same extraordinary blend of Morricone (at his most playful but still sublime),violence and extreme close-ups mixed with long panoramic shots, this is quite simply a forgotten eccentric masterpiece. The peformances from Rod Steiger and James Coburn are in keeping with the mood of the film, sometimes odd, at other times compelling. Although not in any way subtle, this virtual diatribe (witness the intentionally Nazi-like mass execution scenes) is precisely the sort of film that simply would not be made nowadays. It is something to treasure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the whole picture, 27 Feb 2006
Giu La Testa/Fistful of Dynamite/Duck You Sucker is an extraordinary but little known masterpiece from brilliant director Sergio Leone. Heavily cut and badly distributed on its initial release, it has yet to find the audience and respect it deserves. There is far more to it than a action western: it is a deep meditatioon on the nature of revolution and the bonds of friendship. It is also full of humour, very well acted, and extremely well written. That being said, the problem with the current release is that it is the short version, runnning only 132 minutes. The original release runs about 162 minutes and is a very different and far superior cut. Like Leone's other masterpiece, Once Upoin a Time in the West, Duck You Sucker has been badly meddled with by ignorant distributors. Hopefully the full version will be available one day. It's worth the wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous film, marvellous DVD
This DVD is worth its weight in gold. It is a beautiful looking version of the complete film, which is, in my opinion, Sergio's best. And that is saying a lot! Read more
