Amazon.co.uk Review

Shot in the bright postal colours of a seaside postcard, 1971's Carry On Henry applies the usual Carry On sniggering to the married life of Henry VIII. Talbot Rothwell's script is standard bedroom farce and full of jokes about choppers, while the threat of beheading and the actuality of torture are constantly present but only as the terrible things that happen to cartoon characters who will be back next time. Sid James turns in one of his better performances as the endlessly lecherous and fickle Henry, married to Joan Sims and lusting after Barbara Windsor. There is a genuine sexual chemistry between James and Windsor, which at times almost breaks open the farce formula. The usual regulars--Kenneth Williams as Thomas Cromwell, Terry Scott as Cardinal Wolsey, Charles Hawtrey as Sir Roger--do their usual turns; Williams is more subdued than usual, while Hawtrey hugely enjoys playing the Queen's secret lover. This was not one of the high points of the series, but it has its own curious charm. --Roz Kaveney

DVD Description

Carry On Henry is the (almost) true story of the love life of that much-married English monarch, King Henry VIII (Sid James). A right Royal flush is guaranteed when flirty Bettina (Barbara Windsor) becomes a favourite at court much to the displeasure of Queen Marie (Joan Sims). Discover previously hidden details of Henry’s private life, such as his hatred of garlic and his love of hunting (wenches, that is!). Sid James turns in a majestic performance and is given noble support by Carry On greats Kenneth Williams, Terry Scott, Charles Hawtrey and Kenneth Connor as his not-so-loyal courtiers.

5.0 out of 5 stars a few historical liberties taken., 14 Nov 2003

This is great fun. "Carry On Cleo" is usually regarded as the best of the historical Carry Ons, and it is, but this is pretty darn good too. Sid James is almost the Henry VIII we wish the real one had been! A Cockney 'Enery (years before Ray Winstone did it), getting the hots for every buxom wench in sight, most particularly the vivacious Barbara ("Ma'am the King has done me!") Windsor. Joan Sims is on fine spitting form as his garlic-chewing shrewish French wife ... you didn't know Henry had a French wife? Ah well that's something else you've learnt! I also can't help feeling Kenneth Williams should have played Cromwell for real, as he has the exact right sort of reptilian air about him, "there's only one person I trust around here ... and that's ME!" Terry Scott as Cardinal Wolsey, Kenneth Connor as the Prince of Berks, and Charles Hawtrey as a somewhat unlikely red-hot lover (Sir Roger of Bedside Manor, Wilts) all add to the fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars real funny british comedy with the return of the fruity cast, 8 Feb 2001
Sid James being the lead in this saulte to the royal Henry VIII. Sid womanises, rants, raves and roars throughout the whole film bringing nothing but a tear to my eye. The start of the film being the most memorable where sid's wife goes to the axe is a well thought and funny begining but the fun just dosn't stop there. A real funny film and well worth the price!

In short I can only describe this Carry on as well as all the others as the best of traditional British comedy. It's how comedy should be Bawdy but tasteful and ,for me, all of them are highly recommended. Regards.Matt Marsh
