Amazon.co.uk Review

As the fourth season of Angel starts, everything is still as we left it in the previous series: Angel has been sunk to the bottom of the sea in an iron box by his inexplicable and vindictive son Connor and Cordelia has been summoned to higher realms to await orders. Gunn and Fred are left in the Hyperion Hotel, unsure about what has happened to their friends, and Lilah is working hard to seduce Wesley to the dark side. In the first few episodes, some of this is resolved but it's almost immediately replaced by far worse crises: prophesies of doom accumulate more rapidly even than usual in this wonderfully gloomy show and a horned rock-like Beast rains fire on Los Angeles.

Cordelia seems to have left her memory in Heaven and an attempt to regain it in "Spin the Bottle" (written by the show's creator Joss Whedon) causes chaos as her love for Angel has been replaced by a strange obsession with young Connor. Fred finds out more about how she was trapped in a demon dimension in "Supersymmetry" and we meet a mysterious woman who shoots electricity from her fingers in "Ground State". In an attempt to find out more about the Beast, Angel is turned back into his evil former self, Angelus, who demonstrates to his former friends just how much damage he can do locked in a cage by using his eyes and his vicious tongue. This is Angel's most tightly dramatic season yet--with a story arc of surprising intensity punctuated by the show's usual wit and sexiness. --Roz Kaveney

Video Description

After Angel fled Sunnydale, he and Cordelia set up base in a hotel in Los Angeles, where he now fights demons and helps the helpless. Season 4 finds Angel still stuck at the bottom of the ocean. He keeps hallucinating his son Connor and Cordelia, but he cannot escape reality. Fred and Gunn are on the case to find him. In the second episode, Angel visits Lorne in Las Vegas. Lorne is surrounded by other green karaoke kings and queens and performs to the gang! Whilst Lorne tries to read Angel’s aura to put him back on the right path, the rest of the Angel crew take to the casinos in a truly hilarious episode. This season sees some fantastic martial arts fighting, especially from the series newcomer, Connor. Together the father and son fighting duo run rings around the Los Angeles demons and baddies. Faith the vampire slayer joins the Angel gang. Taken out of prison by Wes, they convince her that they need her help. This causes a bitchy atmosphere when Cordelia finds out, as she remembers the havoc Faith caused for Buffy, way back in Sunnydale.

3.0 out of 5 stars Something's still missing..., 20 Jul 2003
Angel as gathered a loyal following over its four-season run, and will now be Joss Whedons flagship show for the 2003/04 season. However, it has attracted just as much criticism, particularly with regards to characterisation.

Season 4 continuously follows on from one episode to the next, meaning that the events are roughly set over a 3-4 week period. This creates a complex, multi-layered story arc similar in style to 24. Although there are some good ideas - and some amazing episodes - the tension and interest is not retained. Season 4 Part 1 is a good example. "Deep Down" is a very good season opener. But the next five episodes are mediocre, due to the fact that the characters are not as fully-realised as their Buffy the Vampire Slayer counterparts. "Apocalypse, Nowish" re-invigorates the show for the rest of this boxset. "Awakening" is particularly good.

Its hard to explain just why Season 4 Part 1 doesn't get five stars. The final five episodes of the set ( episodes 7 to 11 of the season) are some of the best in the entire Buffy/Angel franchise. Others have their moments ("Spin The Bottle"), others are just boring ("Ground State", "Supersymmetry") whilst "Spin the Bottle" is a not-quite-as-good imitation of Buffy's "Tabula Rasa". The lack of character development and believable stories for Cordelia is my biggest complaint. What she does in "Apocalyse, Nowish" is just wrong, purely there for shock value and to add a twist to the tale. The amnesia storyline is poor and the lack of clarification over her between-season hiatus is unsatisfying. This gets only worse over the second part of the season. Sadly Charisma Carpenter will not be a part of the Season Five cast. Draw your own conclusions.

There's plenty of potential, but there is no real sense of chemistry between the characters, and the storyline sometimes just can't hold up. Its a shame, because Angel could be amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concerning Angel, 22 Jul 2003
While Buffy re-establishes itself in its final season by returning to its roots in terms of humour, style and action, the fourth series of of Angel must represent a pinnacle of evolution, not just for the show itself but for everything Joss Whedon has created. From the first moment of the first episode, the show explodes into action and, unbelievably, the pace does not let up for one single episode. This is the first time I've ever watched almost an entire series on the edge of my seat! There are always some fans who prefer episodes based on conclusive one-off storylines, and then the rest of us who prefer those that advance the storyline in terms of character exploration and interaction, but everyone will be satisfied as thre is always plenty of action, but the characters all continue to be thrust into situations where we see further into every dark facet of their personality. The cliffhangers that precede every development in the Angel/Cordy love-saga are truly torturous, especially that one episode... I won't give it away, but you'll know what I mean when you see it!
The Oedipal theme in Angels family tree takes a new twist, in a direction I really didn't think they'd go in, but this only goes to show how the writers are prepared to leave no stone unturned as they unearth ever funnier and darker sides to the sexual energy that charges Angel Invesatigations. Angelus certainly isn't slow to point it out..
(comic book guy voice): besht episodesh ever!

4.0 out of 5 stars Angel Investigations take a turn for the dark side, 21 Jun 2003
Angel has never captured the same kind of attention and admiration of its parent series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's a shame becuase the last two seasons (Season 3 in particular) have had stunningly crafted story arcs. The same could be said for Season 3 of Buffy, then things took a turn for the worse in Season 4....can the same be said of Angel?

Well...yes and no....

The first episode, "Deep Down", picks up three months after Angel sank to the bottom of the ocean (thanks to his son Connor and Season 3 regular Justine) and Cordelia was transported to a "higher plane" thanks to demon guide Skip. Wesley is considerably worse for wear, and Fred and Gunn have been parenting Connor, unaware of the reasons behind Angel and Cordy's vanishing act. Needless to say when Angel is rescued and everything is out in the open, all hell breaks loose. "Deep Down" is a fantastic season opener that more than lives up to the Season 3 arc.

However what follows is distinctly average. The episodes aren't bad, they just lack the spark that separates the average and mundane from the spectacular. "Ground State" is a rip-off of themes more commonly found in (yes, really) X-Men. "The House Always Wins" is a diverting but hardly brilliant trip to Vegas; things start to pick up a little in "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" as a coming apocalypse becomes the focus of the season arc. Things slip again with "Supersymmetry", a re-hash of last seasons "Fredless" with added stuff. "Spin The Bottle" is amusing in places but is completely derivative of Buffy Season 6 episode "Tabula Rasa".

Thankfully "Rain of Fire" is the beginning of one of the more emotionally intense and exciting story arcs in the Buffy/Angel franchise. The Apocalypse takes centre stage as does the Beast, a seemingly indestructible force that is responsible for, sadly, destroying one of the best elements of the Angel series. The twists and plot development of "Habeas Corpses" and "Long Days Journey" lead to the absolutely stunning "Awakening" - it has a killer twist that really will make your jaw drop. And "Soulless" sees the emergence of an old Buffy villain, continuing to develop a complex story arc.

The first episode and episodes 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 are owrthy of a five-star rating; episodes 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are around 3 stars, hence the overall 4 Stars. When Angel Season 4 Part 1 is good it’s amazing; when its average, it’s just plain boring.
