Amazon.co.uk Review

Apollo 440's fourth studio album, Dude Descending a Staircase, is their most retro album yet. Taking its name from a neo-psycadelic painting by Ausgang, its acid funk influences couldn't be more apparent if they had a photo of George Clinton on the cover.

The title track and lead single is a collaboration with the Beatnuts on vocal duties over a melee of piano loops, squelchy 303s and a guitar that sounds like Carlos Santana's. It sounds like it should be a mess but is held together by the band's incredibly slick production skills, which have improved greatly over the years. "Hustler Groove" featuring Lightnin' Rod is a homage to the pioneering Hustler's Convention by Rod featuring Kool & the Gang, but aside from the classic vocal, it sounds remarkably similar to the aforementioned title track and indeed most other songs on the album.

Dude Descending a Staircase has all the key elements that have pleased fans since the mid-1990s. However, rather than develop their big beat style into something exciting and different, like the Lo fidelity Allstars they have produced a sanitised variation of their former self that is at best an exercise in nostalgia, at worst a support for that wonky leg on the coffee table. --David Trueman

5.0 out of 5 stars A Blend of Psychedelic Fun & Pure Class!!!!!, 24 Jun 2003
An absolutely brilliant album, a must buy for all @440 fans!!!
I stumbled across this group a few years ago and bought two of their albums 'Electro Glide In Blue' and 'Gettin High on Your Own Supply'. The new album is a massive leap from some of their earlier stuff (mainly because of the increased vocal input from guest artists). The pick of CD1 has to include 'Hustler Groove', 'Disco Sucks', 'Electronic Civil Disobedience' and '1,2,3,4' (a track which sounds as though its been influenced by The Who). The tracks have a wonderfully psychedelic feel about them, with some great guitar samples. CD2 is a little more like the @440 everyone knows and loves, but there are some great tracks such as 'Diamonds In The Sidewalk', Bulletproof Blues' and the haunting 'Bad Chemistry'. You will not be disappointed with this album, you must buy it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant.....AGAIN, 17 Sep 2003
Wow, I was just getting over nose surgery last week when I popped into Vertigo(Grand Rapids, Michigan) to buy this one and well needless to say I ended up with a nosebleed again(HA HA)although I really did(HA HA).

The 1,2,3,4 song was really great because the keyboard line reminded me of the Inspiral Carpets, Pete Wylie on vocals. I really love this album all around, and these guys obviously love to make music, their enthusiasm just comes through loud and clear, thank you I feel a bit better now.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Reception, 25 Jun 2003
After hearing many great tracks from Apollo 440 previously, I ordered it straight away. When it arrived, I ripped it open and eagerly put the first CD in my CD player. The first track wasn't anything surprising or new, being the earlier released single. It's not one of my favourites, but it's still a good listen. A great aspect of Apollo 440 is how they cover many different musical styles.
However, it's rare that listeners would like everything they do. Therefore, I, and I know of others too, didn't quite appreciate all of the tracks on the album (ones that didn't apppeal to me are 1,2,3,4). Some initally I didn't like, but really started to grow on me, like Hustler Groove. I felt, however, that some of the tracks were slightly regurgitated: nothing positively innovative; as well as some good tracks being cut a bit short (like Bad Chemistry, one of my favourites).
In tracks like Rope, Rapture and the Rising sun and Suitcase '88, the musical subtlties can be easily overlooked; making the song appear lacklustre. They are very good 'ambient' songs, good more for background music rather than something to sit and listen to.

Some tracks, like Check your Ego, Suitcase '88, although solid songs, can seem quite repetative.
All of the negative points, however, are balanced out by some stunning tracks, including the (what apears to me) understated Christiane, Bad Chemistry, Existe (which clearly shows Apollo 440's musical abilites), Something's Got to Give, and one that reminds me of Liquid Cool: Diamonds in the Sidewalk can seem quite philosphical; Disco sucks, is oddly as the name suggests, a good, solid Dance dance, and one quite similar in style to the Lost in Space themetune is Escape to the Planet Beyond the Superape: quite a surprising track that seems very true to Apollo 440's style.

3.0 out of 5 stars why 2 Discs?
Had several songs been left out and this cd condensed down to just one disc, we'd be looking at a pretty good release. Read more
