Sissy Spacek won a much-deserved Oscar for her lead in this entertaining biography of country-music legend Loretta Lynn. British director Michael Apted (Gorillas in the Mist) brings fine texture to the Kentucky backwoods section of the film, where the teenage Loretta meets her future husband (Tommy Lee Jones), who ultimately pushes her into show business. Lynn's adult life is well covered, from her spouse's philandering to her own on-stage crackups; but between the chapter-and-verse recollections, the script by Thomas Rickman is layered with life and moments of great humour. No wooden portrait, this is a vibrant film made outstanding by the colorful performances of the two leads, as well as Beverly D'Angelo and the Band's Levon Helm. --Tom Keogh

This is the true life story of Country Music legend Lorreta Lynn's struggle from rags to riches. Sissy Spacek won an Oscar and supposedly did her own singing! Tommy Lee Jones playes supporting husband Mooney and Beverley D'Angelo gets to portray Patsy Cline. It's a truly great film, even if you're not a Country Music fan! I first saw this film twenty years ago and I can still remember certain details like the misery Lorretta Lynn lived in the Virginia Mountains before Mooney took her away.

this is one of those films you wish you watch years ago some people may not of herd of her loretta lynn that is this film is about her rise from nothing to superstar played by sissy spacek for which she won a oscar her husband is played by A YOUNG tommy lee jones his first major role or one of them worth watching this is one of those true storey that is true doesnt cut any correners like some do sissy sung all the songs in the film her self haveing takon a year of to follow loretta on the road watching her perform to get it right and she does also another one to mention is BEVERLY D,ANGELO WHO also does her own singing she plays patsy cline in the movie this film is about one of the true giants of the country music a gem you could say P.S THE BOOK IS BASED ON LORETTA OWN AUTOBIOGRAPHY YOU CANT GET ANY TRURER THEN THAT [ I WOULD PUT THIS FILM ON THE SAME LEVEL AS WALK THE LINE THE JOHNNEY CASH FILM]

i recently puchased this brilliant dvd and was absolutely thrilled to see how the very talented LORETTA LYNN worked her way from a very immature girl to an international country and western artist. SISSY SPACEK played her brilliantly and sung the songs to perfection and TOMMY LEE JONES starred as MOONEY although a little wooden at times. i must also mention BEVERLY D;ANGELO for her role as PATSY CLINE a wonderful likeness. altogether a first class dvd which i am sure will thrill any fan of this fabulous singer.
