More of the same - but BIGGER!, 4 Nov 2003
IMHP, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 was one the greatest video games of all time. It managed to be deep enough to keep me ( a 34 year old man!) engrossed for months, yet was simple enough that my 4 year old son never grew bored of it. The genius design meant that no matter how much you played the game, there was always a new challenge just out of reach, and this kept you coming back for that one last go. With this in mind I kept a keen eye out for the PC release of this latest update. Yet even today, with the game sat on my hard drive, only Amazon seem to have THPS4 in stock! With even Activision's web site denying all knowledge of the PC version. So, obviously, this game must really stink!!OH NO! This retains everything that we know and love about the previous games and manages to go completely freeform in the way the game is presented. Whilst it is still possible to skate each level with a two minute timer ticking away, the career mode lets you skate around indefinitely, picking and choosing which challenges to take on by talking to the various characters dotted around the areas. Anyone familiar with a Tony Hawk game will be instantly familiar with the types of challenges and the control system, but hey, when these worked so well before, why change them? Finally, you have the multiplayer options. Basically if you like MP games you'll love this. It seems to work OK on a 56k modem but would come alive with DSL. The only negative point would be concerning the graphics. Whilst they are pretty good and are better than previous versions, they don't really set the world on fire. We PC owners are getting pretty spoiled asthetically now-a-days and anything less than jawdropping is just not good enough ;-) So, anyone with a passing interest of video games/extreme sports/pop culture would be more than happy with this game. Why then, is no-one stocking the thing?!!
