4.0 out of 5 stars Battlestar Galactica is back, 2 Jan 2004

Right, set the scene for you....I LOVE BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. I had this on order since August and have got the Special Edition DVD Box set on the way. I am not even going to try an unbiased review as it will be impossible.

Now I think this game is great, however it is quite tough, but not impossible. The graphics are functional over spectacular however there is no visible slowdown at all, which is quite an achievement when you consider everything that is happening on screen. The Audio is top notch with all the music from the original series really adding to the atmosphere however the Cylon voices are a little bit different. The cut scenes set the sections up well and it is all done with just the right amount of cheese to make it feel like the 70's are back with us.

The only bad point of this game is the targeting system. All of the controls are set up brilliantly however on some missions you are given a set of targets to hit, it is extremely difficult to find them as the targeting system does not pick out your primary objectives for you. On time based missions this just makes things REALLY irritating.

Apart from this one flaw, I think it is an exceptional addition to the Galactica universe.

4.0 out of 5 stars US reviewers can't take the pace, 16 Dec 2003
I got this for christmas and had to sneak an early try after reading from many US reviews how devilishly difficult this game is. Well, I must be half way through it after just half a day and the last space based shoot 'em up I had a go at was WING COMMANDER 3 about ten years ago

Considering the first level is a dogfight involving 30+ fighters, a battlestar and a basestar this is actually pretty easy! (RTFM) Lovely sounds, graphics, the plot was aparently worked on by the comic writer Grant "Invisibles", Arkham Asylum" Morrison (but I have to say so far there isn't much of it).

The one negative so far is the dialogue, which is a bit cheesy - but then this is Battlestar Galactica.. Interestingly the game was developed based on the old series but was changed before release to incorporate elements of the new mini-series. Only saddoes like myself will notice or even partially care :-)

More fun than Enter the Matrix anway.. I suppose I should wrap it back up now..

4.0 out of 5 stars Good fun playing as Adama in the Viper but not a great sim, 14 Jan 2004

OK before I start, you need to realise that I'm a big Battlestar Galactica fan. Not absolutely crazy but really enjoyed it, which is the primary reason why I initially bought this game. It was exciting to think about actually flying a viper in a dog fight and I was very excited about the series being re-born again.

At first flying the viper was novel, it was exciting and there was a rush of nostalgia. But then I started actually looking a the game itself rather than being excited about it being Battlestar Galactica. I like sims, don't get me wrong. I mean I haven't owned that many but i've played a few in my time. Due to the constraints of the BG Universe (I guess), there was a lack of upgrades to look forward to on your own ship. Admittedly, you can gain up to 3 wingmen and after every successful mission your/their stats can be boosted, depending on how well you did.

I found it annoying that there was no way of changing target to the nearest enemy cylon vessel (although you can change target). The advanced controls weren't actually that advanced but some of the missions make up for making things difficult. It was nice that you don't just get to fly a viper, but other vessels as well. All in all, I enjoyed it as it was about something I really loved and it was fun to play, but as an actual game in itself it wasn't actually that good. Not too much replay value in it. The Likelyhood is though is that if you are reading this, you are as much of a BG fan as me.
