In 1984 Cliff Richard was starting to lose his grip on the Top Ten UK singles chart. It wasn't because of poor songs. Not at all. From the previous album Silver were the singles: Ocean Deep, Baby Your Dynamite and Please Don't Fall In Love.

She Means Nothing to Me was the first single to come from The Rock Connection. However The Rock Connection didn't sell well, because it was mostly made up of songs previously issued on Silver's companion Rock n Roll Silver.

Had EMI left well alone and just released The Rock Connection, then it could've possibly have done alot better. One song in particular which stands out is Lovers and Friends. This song is a gem and does give you the Cliff rock feel.

Willie and The Hand Jive is a brilliant reworking of the 1960 B Side and gives you a total electro feel with good rock beat and Cliff tells his own beginning during the song.

Shooting From The Heart and Heart User could've done better as singles, but I think that The Rock Connection detered buyers away given the lack of new material. They are good songs. It's a shame they only reached No51 and No45 respectively.

Like it or not this album is an inbetween album. Alan Tarney had started his production with Cliff with I'm No Hero and Wired For Sound. For some reason he waited till 1987 till he produced Cliff's big seller Always Guaranteed.

For 5 weeks in 1984 Cliff fans were treated to one of Cliff's only rock albums. Pity it didn't sell more.

In my opinion this is a brilliant album, and one that really deserved much more success and acclaim than it received when it was first released.

Although it DOES contain a fair few covers of early rock 'n' roll classics, these are given totally original treatment by Cliff, who breathes new life into them. For example, his version of 'Lucille' bears very little resemblance to the Little Richard original, but is brought totally up-to-date by Cliff's expertise.

The same goes for the other classics - they are performed very differently to the originals, but really deserve to he heard. I don't think, for example, I have ever heard more emotional or heartfelt versions of 'Donna' or 'There'll Never Be Anyone Else But You'.

Cliff also up-dates some of his own early hits - in particular 'Move It' and 'It'll Be Me'. Both of these are great versions.

However, this is NOT just an album of covers. It also contains some great, original material - 'Heart User', 'Lovers & Friends', 'La Gonave', 'Learning How to Rock 'n' Roll', to name but a few. These, again, are excellent, and fit into this album beautifully.

All of these songs gel together to complete another excellent album from Sir Cliff. Highly Recommended!!
