VAMPYRES - DAUGHTERS OF DRACULA 1974 R2 DVD

There is no connection to Dracula in this film at all, the 'Daughters of Dracula' tag was added as a marketing ploy after the original title was changed from 'Blood Hunger'. This 1974 movie is a classic of the erotic-horror genre which was gaining popularity in the 1970s and led by Hammer Studios, although this film was produced independently by Lurco Films and filmed exclusively in the UK, mostly around Oakley Court near Windsor, which at the time was on permanent lease to Hammer, prior to the present conversion to a hotel.

Two beautiful lesbian women are murdered by a jealous husband and mysteriously return as vampires to haunt the house where they died, enticing unsuspecting travellers to join them at the mansion for sex orgies and then draining them of blood to feed their vampiric lusts and then returning to their tomb at day break.

The two stars, Marrianne Morris and Anulka Dziubinska were both centre fold models whose acting careers only really lasted a few years in minor television appearances, both married and retired. Watch out for a young Michael Byrne in his debut feature film role. To a modern audience the film is probably a bit hammy with the soft porn element dominating the horror story, but it is a classic of the genre and worth adding to any horror film collection and has become a cult item in the last few years.

This Anchor Bay edition is one of the longer versions,90 mins, having only 30 seconds cut from the original release; most censored versions running between 70-85 mins. The film had over and hour of filmed scenes which ended on the cutting room floor and sadly have been totally lost except for a few stills in the archives. The DVD extras include the US and British trailers, audio commentary by the director Jose Larraz and a stills gallery.

Guilty pleasure? I don't think so, there's enough quality here to justify this as a genuine (minor) horror classic. Plot is minimal, this is all about stylish sleaze and lashings of moist green atmosphere as our two titular heroines plough through lotharios, boozers, caravanners with lusty abandon. I can understand why some would dismiss this as sexist, leering trash but perversely that's its very attraction, and it's beautifully done - nobody could claim this was a hack work - it looks too good.
Blu ray picture is OK - heavy on the grain, so stick with the DVD if thats a problem, but brighter and more detailed. In a perfect world we would be able to have both, but shelving, sadly, isn't infinite.

This was the first 'X' film I sneaked in to see as a teenager and it was a strange one. The plot is pretty vague but basically two lesbian beauties are murdered in a big old gothic style country house, then some years later presumably, they live on there as vampires. There's no male Dracula type or anything, just these two women on their own.
By hitchhiking along the surrounding country roads they lure men back to the house in their cars, get them p*ssed and kill them. Each deceased victim and his car are then seen again smashed up against a tree, to appear to the police like a typical road accident so no further investigation required.
One man however, in a BMW, is kept hanging around for days at the house as Fran the dark haired vampire, takes a shine to him and feeds on his blood from a gash in his arm every night like she's sucking on an ice lolly.
The actresses are beautiful, there's gore, lesbian lust and nudity in a Hammer Films sort of a way, but I still can't work out the ending. This is a cult film in some countries apparently, and I don't think it's ever been on TV.

I'd been wanting to watch this film for a while before finally getting hold of it, and I was genuinely surprised by it's quality. This film is of a very different calibre of production values to, say, a Jean Rollin film (he shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a camera), or a Jess Franco film (don't know why I love his schlock but I do). It's well acted and very atmospheric with a 70's horror film score that actually increases tension instead of telegraphing everything that's gonna happen, and the two protaganists are seriously hypnotic on the screen. All in all, it's gotta be one of my favorite vampire flcks, an' I've seen a few, baby.

You can't help laughing when you see a big dumb schmuck completely ignoring the age-old rule: never pick up hitch-hikers - especially when it's dusk, there's two of them, and they're only 100 yards from where they live. It'll end in tears...

Employing the tried and tested trick of ugly-one-hides-in-the-bushes-while-fit-one-flashes-thigh-at-horny-motorist (only in this case, there is no ugly one), the two thirsty sirens of Joseph Larraz' pleasingly notorious 'Vampyres' enjoy enviable success amongst the sideburn fizzogged wallies in their Lionels and bling.
Luring them with innuendo to the trusty mansion house, there to suck the life-blood (and everything else!) out of them during delirious, hysterical orgies.

This pair make Caligula look coy; naked in seconds, frantic panting nymphs on a sanguinary frenzied night-ride, cutting a swathe through any stereotype 70's blockheads that come their way - and it's difficult to be critical.
Two beauties swirling down a dim country lane - heaving cleavage, diaphanous frocks.... Thick bozo with torque for a brain, and ludicrous hair and collars...yeah, they're gonna want YOU plant-pot. Nothing suspicious here at all. You just know these guys are deserving every-thing they get - and they get plenty.
You wonder who does the girlies laundry, they'll also be getting plenty - of overtime.

'Vampyres' works it's low-budget suzzies off to be disturbing and disgusting. Some of the vigorous bedroom stuff is wince-inducing: softcore lashing and thrashing inevitably leading to hardcore slashing and splashing.
Larraz is a no-frills film director, he simply gets it out and points it, and you just know you've got to look as 90 minutes solid of bums, breasts and bubbling blood unfold before you.
