Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Live were originally labelled the poor man's U2, thanks to their anthemic choruses and earnest spirituality. Unlike the Irish superstars, however, the Pennsylvania quartet have found what they're looking for on Birds of Pray, their sixth album. Singer and principal songwriter Ed Kowalczyk proclaims in "Heaven" that not only has he got his faith back, he's seen God in his infant daughter and a sunset. Gooey sentiments, perhaps, but Kowalczyk sings them with a sweet sincerity that delivers a solid psychic punch.

The band seemed to lose their way around the turn of the century, embroidering their trademark guitar-heavy sound with an abundance of frivolous loops, gadgetry and gratuitous fretwork. This time, thankfully, they've gone back to basics, throwing out the trashy keyboards and again pounding out their rhythmically charged rock. Kowalczyk is also writing less ponderous lyrics. The singer has found his salvation in love, which has softened his stern demeanour and given his stream-of-consciousness songs a playful spin not heard before on a Live album. --Jaan Uhelszki

CD Description
'Birds Of Pray' is the sixth album from Live and the follow-up to their 2001 release 'V'. Essentially a post-grunge band much in the same vein as Nickelback Puddle Of Mud and Creed, what sets them apart is their ability to fuse alternativerock with a positive spiritual message.

5.0 out of 5 stars STUNNING return to form, 31 Jul 2003
By S. Holland "bearcoatpei" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was beginning to suspect that Live had lost the plot with their last release, V. But after about 30 seconds of listening to the opening track, Heaven, I knew that all was right with the world again. Live are once again back creating emotional, raw edged rock fronted by the sexiest vocals in music!

This album is quality throughout and is typical of Live in that you could never mistake their style for anybody else, but each album has a different feel and you'd never confuse any two of their songs for another. For veterans of well over 10 years together, they manage to sound so much more fresh and vital than many younger bands. And I've always liked Ed's lyrics as they are honest, narrative and very wry and funny in parts - that last bit often goes way over people's heads.

Stand out tracks are opener Heaven, the sublime and beautiful ballad Runaway, the powerful and very sexy Like I Do, River Town, Out To Dry, Lighthouse and Sweet Release. Last but not least is What Are We Fighting For - this is Ed's songwriting at it's most eloquent and beautiful. He manages to distill our fears and confusion about modern society and the war in Iraq in about eight sentences.

This is THE album of the year. If you think you don't like Live, buy this and fall in love.

3.0 out of 5 stars not all good news..., 20 Aug 2004
By jaybravo (cambridge, UK) - See all my reviews
As the other reviewers have pointed out, this is a big step forward after their last nu-metal inspired album "V" which was very poor. This time, the song-writing is catchy and stirring but is spoiled by a very glib performance. The verses and choruses come thick and fast, and delivered with very little subtlety, as if they're always in a great hurry to get to the next song. There are no epic moody breaks which were a feature of "Secret Samadhi" and "Throwing Copper", instead it's all in your face. This problem is compounded by the production - any subtlety or depth has been stripped away by cranking up the compression to ridiculous levels, making it sound like an FM broadcast on a middle-of-the-road rock station which is a great shame because Live songs can be so much better than that. This recording makes them sound shallow and generic. I would recommend the album for it's good songwriting, just prepare to be disappointed and frustrated by the lack of depth in the performance

5.0 out of 5 stars A STUNNING RELEASE FROM AN UNDER-RATED BAND, 23 Sep 2003
By I Grayson (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Live have experienced super stardom, and then as with many of the more talented bands around today, faded from the public view (making way for bland R & B, and processed boy bands). Unlike many of their contemporaries however, the quality of their songwriting and their musical output has never faltered ~ with the exception maybe of the very average 'V'. Birds Of Pray however, is a stunning return to form, not seen since Throwing Copper / Secret Samadhi.

Each song on the album is unique, fuelled with a new sense of enlightenment, and the feeling that the band actually enjoyed making this album and taking it back to their 'root sound'.

With the heartfelt Heaven, the soaring chorus of the amazing Sweet Release, the acoustic beauty of Run Away - the only almost miss is 'What are We Fighting For' with its slightly childish (feeling rushed) lyrics ie, 'the crucifix aint no baseball bat'..mmmmm Ed can do better. The song itself is good, just the lyrics let it down.

Overall, this is without doubt the album of the year, and anyone who hestitates to purchase this record, is missing valuable time when they could be listening to one of the best bands on the planet who are at the top of their game.
