When The Fimbles arrived on kids TV in 2002, it unfairly drew comparison with The Teletubbies. Beyond the furry man-sized suits, there's actually a lot more going for the show. It's the perfect successor in many ways, featuring just a few more characters and situations to appeal to children beginning to form and follow words.

Within each episode, something is found by one of the three Fimbles (Fimbo, Florrie or baby Pom) who populate the Purple Meadow. Near the Tinkling Tree, they experience the excitement (Fimbling Feeling) of discovering something new and eagerly share it with their friends. This allows for the soothing tones of Roly Mo to relax everyone with a story tailored to the found object.

More often than not, the group is joined by the fluffy Mummy and egg family of Bessie and Ribble, whose wise observations always lead to a safety warning or two. The show's real star is left to last: the irrepressible Rockit the frog bounces all over the place causing chaos and hilarity simultaneously.

As a format, Fimbles is familiar enough for the kids to know what favourite bit to look forward to. It's also significantly different enough to distance itself from any previous show. --Paul Tonks

The Fimbles are very appealing to children as they are brightly coloured, speak English clearly (except for Baby Pom), they play games and they sing songs.

The colours help the children identify the Fimbles, they are eyecatching colours which can help very young children to learn to focus and slightly older children to learn colours. Their surroundings are also very colourful but still bare a resemblance to the things that children may see around them.

The English spoken and sung is very clear, the songs are catchy and the words are repeated enough times for children to grasp but not too many times to drive adults to distraction. The songs are short easy and repeated for children to learn.

Roly mole and Rocket the frog are lovely characters for children to associate with Roly takes the form of a kind of teacher who tells stories relating to the subject and Rocket takes the form of the less intelligent, who the fimbles have to explain things to.

The 2 birds at the end of each episode ask the child to remember what had happened and increases memory. My two year old absolutely loves it... "CAN YOU HELP ME SING MY SONG..."

This DVD was a real disappointment. There are only four episodes on here. I watched these with my children once each and they've never asked for them again. Not on my watch with mummy list.
