Gina Lollobrigida and James Mason conspire in this superb comedy/western to con the Mexican government out of a million dollars, employing along the way the services of an apparently hapless gang led by Lee Van Cleef. However, there is no safe that can’t be blown and in their pursuit of further riches the marauding gang stumble their way from bank to bank but the real goal is the Mexican government and the $1,000,000 but the Mexican Army and the Revolutionaries have their own ideas about how events will unfold.

"Bad Man's River"(72) is one of those strange Westerns to come out of that Spaghetti period, when they were made with care free abandon in far flung European destinations like Sardinia and the Canary Islands. This period did produce a few good Westerns, but sadly this is not one of them. This film like so much of our fruit these days, is a produce of Spain. It was made on location there and was directed by a native of that Country Eugenio Martin, which was anglicised to Gene Martin for its release. It boasts three front line stars in James Mason, Lee Van Cleef and Gina Lollobrigida. Lee Van Cleef was extremely popular in Europe at that time for his Spaghetti Westerns and therefore has an excuse for being in the film. As for James Mason I can only assume either he wanted to do some sightseeing in Madrid, or he was very strapped for cash. Aside from that he has no excuse. Gina without wishing to be cruel was in the twilight of her career and may have been flattered by the offer of female lead.

The films opening is memorable for what must be a strong contender for the worst song in the history of sound movies. If this had come out at the advent of the talkies they would have gone back to silents! It is a song that would have sellers of ear muffs rubbing their hands with joy. Although it is laughably bad I would not recommend you buy the film to find out. Lee Van Cleefs inept gang in the film dress more like a little boy in a cowboy outfit bought for Christmas, but less scary. Think Chistmas before the ipod age. The story, such as it is, involves Lee and his gang doing some robberies and being chased about a lot. But they are always swindled out of the money by the scheming Gina who keeps one step ahead of them.Read more ›

a comic style western , not bad ,but not one of lee van cleff`s best ,unless your a fan don`t bother unless you see it cheap .
