Product Description

Product Description
Breed is a science fiction shoot-'em up that blends addictive, accessible, free-roaming gameplay with cutting-edge, state-of-the-art technology to expand not only the gameplay potential, but also the player's perceived freedom within the game world. With this in mind, up to 16 players can join together via LAN or Internet.

Utilising both first and third person viewpoints, players can freely take control of a variety of units and vehicles--from standard ground troops to APCs and Dropships--to do battle with The Breed both in orbit and on the Earth's surface. The objective is simple: Halt the invasion of The Breed and stop the destruction of mankind.

The sheer diversity of weapons, vehicles and geographical locations allows every mission to offer a refreshingly different challenge, whether the player is entering an underground bunker on foot, driving their jeep across rough terrain, or piloting their fighter craft down a heavily guarded canyon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad - but VERY frustrating and very hard, 5 April 2004
By A Customer
I have no idea why they bothered with the squad based idea. Yes, sometimes the squad gives you a little bit of backup - but, on the whole, they are pretty useless. All you end up doing is swapping between them to take advantage of their different weapons at different times. This would have been a lot less hassle if they just let you "carry" all of the weapons yourself. Unrealistic, yes - more fun? YES.

Also - this is what I would call an "arcade" game. It is SO hard (right from the outset) that you basically find yourself doing the following:

1> move
2> die
3> move again
4> die again
5> move again and this time finally see what is killing you
6> play again and this time take enemy gun out before it kills you this time

You then repeat the above forumula every 10 "yards" or so. This is particularly true of the tank missions. This game would make a fortune if it was coin-op based (hence what I call an arcade game)

In other words - there is no real chance to employ your skill at FPS games and think on your toes. You just don't have a chance. No reactions or anything similar will save you here first time - you just have to keep dying/failing and then remember where everything was the next time.

Not sure how much longer I will keep playing this as it makes you want to scream!

2.0 out of 5 stars Breed - a review of the game, 25 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Breed is not a good game. It probably was a decent game once. I just had to know what it was like so I ordered it without seeing a full review. And I have learned my lesson. I am not saying it is absolutely terrible. But I was expecting something like Halo. What I got was a really bad copy of Unreal 2. At first you notice the little things, like if you change key mapping then the game won't know in the help screens. Then it dawns on you that your squad have no intelligence. And then the rest is just FPS in a painting by numbers way. I have already traded the game in. I would avoid this game and spend your money on the excellent Unreal Tournament 2004, Farcry or the fun Battlefield Vietnam.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but not without its flaws, 30 Jul 2004
Breed is a game that puts you in the position of a genetically engineered soldier that has to help liberate an overrun Earth from the alien race known as the Breed.
The game has lots of weaponry and vehicles for you to use, and lots of missions with various objectives, so that you arent just shooting everything in one location. There are air and space combat missions, tank rescue missions, and so forth. You can also switch between soldiers for different weapons and abilities, including alien weaponry, and can command your squad in various formations.
However, the game does have its flaws. There are a number of glitches in the game which spoil it and can make it very frustrating to spend 20 minutes completing a mission only to have to do it all over again because of a glitch that causes the cutscene to continue endlessly.
Generally, this game is entertaining, but there are better games out there.
