This film purports to be a "documentary", in fact it is a bunch of people playing up to the cameras more often than not. Some of the 'traditions' were seemingly faked, some of which are pretty despicable, such as the shark baiting segment which the film purports as "locals taking their revenge on sharks for killing and maiming their people". This is pretty unbelievable, and it is my view that this was done specifically for the cameras, and the sharks are pretty much maimed and left to die a slow death in the ocean. Another awful scene was the turtle scene set in the pacific islands which purports to show a turtle losing its way after laying its eggs on land and unable to find its way back to the ocean due to atomic contamination from the US governments atomic bomb tests in the area. It is probable that the filmmakers picked up and moved the turtle away from the ocean and filmed it dying. Much of the rest of the film follows suit, although the Spanish bull run scene at the end is pretty authentic as this couldn't be staged but shows humans cruelty baiting a dumb beast before killing it. The rest of the film is not as upsetting to watch, and generally involves showcasing humanity's stupidity. The film is successful in its attempt to show life as a "Dog's World" (the literal meaning of Mondo Cane) interspersing barbarism to animals with footage of fat old aged americans holidaying in Hawaii, and oafs drinking and playing up to the cameras in the beer halls of Hamburg which shows humanity at its most idiotic. It genuinely shows life as a mess from which we can not be saved which is a pretty nihilistic message. The film is shot beautifully and has a beautiful score, which are two main reasons to see it. In terms of factuality, it gets a 1 star, but in style it gets 4 stars so I give it 3 overall.

I remember when this film first came out in the very early nineteen sixties. The advertisements were lurid, and the film was described as "shocking". Of course, as a girl on the cusp of becoming a teenager, my curiosity was piqued, but, alas, still being under parental supervision, I was forbidden to go and see what all the fuss was about. Well, over forty years after its release, I finally got to see what all that fuss was about. I am sorry to report that the answer simply is: not much.
This Italian made documentary (or "shockumentary", as the critics of the time liked to call it) is little more than a newsreel of some of the more bizarre or seemingly strange practices prevalent in other parts of the world at the time that this documentary was made. Some of it even focuses on the decadence of some "civilized" nations. The film definitely has an anachronistic feel to it, almost amateurish. Some of the voice over dialogue is even patronizing or tongue in cheek, at times. The most shocking thing about the film is how tame most of it seems, although some aspects of it, those having to do with animals, might still be viewed by some as being a little controversial.
Quite frankly, one scene where the well-heeled sit down in a pricey New York restaurant to lunch on a then extravagantly priced meal of fried insects, while repulsive and even decadent, considering other scenes in the film where third world people have undergone hunger, is pretty mild given what they eat nowadays on shows such as "Fear Factor" and "Survivor". Some of the religious self-mortification practiced at the time in remote villages in Italy is a little more shocking, as is the scene involving the "suckling" pig.

Please watch out, the edition from Quantum Leap is abridged and of poor quality. Look out for a "Blue Underground" region 1 release instead
