Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

For Tubular Bells 2003, the ever-perfectionist Mike Oldfield (unhappy, apparently, at the odd bum note on the indubitably classic original) utilises the latest studio techniques and trickery to re-record his flagship classical/folk/rock instrumental masterwork in its bar-for-bar entirety. It may be true that The Bayeux Tapestry would look pretty good if someone re-embroidered all 230 feet of it on a modern sewing machine, but that's hardly the point. Surely, the original Tubular Bells--16 million sales, reverential status, important historical artefact and so on--has more than enough going for it?

Although the production here is fatter and brighter, playing "spot the musical difference" between this and the one that continues to pay for Richard Branson's hot air balloons may require levels of diligence and dedication bordering on pottiness, which in a way is kind of a relief. There are minor distinctions--louder bass guitar, better sounding bagpipes, Sally Oldfield (presumably) joining Mike for a grunt on the always-amusing "Caveman" section and John Cleese playing Master of Ceremonies on "Finale" (saving his best "pining for the fjords" voice for the announcement of the arrival of the "double speed guitar")--but, by and large, the apple cart remains upstanding and no babies are thrown away with the bath water. --Kevin Maidment

CD Description

'Tubular Bells 2003' follows Reading-born Oldfield's 2002 Ibiza-influenced 'Tres Lunas', and is a complete re-recordingof his revered 1973 debut, 'Tubular Bells'. As different instruments are added to the collage of sound they are introduced by John Cleese on this 30th Anniversary version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Re-recorded and sounds fantastic, 26 May 2003
By Fleece (Scotland) - See all my reviews
Laughed my head off when I heard he was re-recording it. I thought, why? It was then I realised it could be quite good. It is a classic piece of music. When I heard the promo I thought it sounded fantastic.

Just bought it today and it sounds fresh and alive. Anyone who liked the original fear not. The music is the same as original but Oldfield has used 90% (he said in an interview) of the original instruments he used on the original with the other 10% new, modern sounding effects. So what you have is the original updated with all the latest recording techniques. Only criticism is John Cleese as master of ceremonies sounded out of place. A bit odd. Is growing on me.

Buy this and you really won't be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not brilliant, 5 Jun 2003
This is an interesting 'remix', which is worth a listen as the music, although fairly similar to the original is played differently enough for it to be fresh. However im not sure that it lives up to the original. I thought that it might have been a jazzed up and more powerful version of tubular bells but instead it is more subtle and probably musically more complex. I think I would choose the live performance or the Tubular Bells II DVD over this. The instruments seem to blend together a little too much and the guitars are present throughout but dont seem to stand out as much as in the original. Despite this it is still tubular bells and the introduction is particularly very good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Balm For The Young ?, 20 Jun 2003
By Paul Dreczko (Hampshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
How could Mike ever hope to improve on his original version. It was the time and place that made the original so very special. Thirty years on it is time to move on Mike and create the music that we will be writing about in 2033. As with all Mike's music it is well worth a visit, but not a standard setter.
The boyhood school trip will be remain forever in Tubular Bells 1973 for those who can listern, but there it should remain.
