5.0 out of 5 stars Classic in the making, 22 Aug 2003
By Jetrocket "jetrocket" (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This is a classy sophisticated recording, pretty much done the old fashioned way -- good songs, clever hooks and top drawer singing and musicianship. Essentially a nu soul record with modern sensibilities, Second Guess goes down very satisfyingly. Opening with the bouyant vocals of Angela Johnson on "Can't Stop", the track grabs you instantly with an easy flowing beat and funky bass drive. The title track follows and it builds to epic dimensions -- lovely fender rhodes playing midly arabic chords, a sweet tenor voice waxing poetically, all building into a tight funk workout that then serves as a coda for the album. The following tracks mellow things out some but still keeps the funk on offer. Other tracks take on differnt musical flavors from club anthems, broken beat washes to mellow jazz-tinged workouts. All in all, Second Guess delivers; it is quite a full meal with much to enjoy - a highlight of 2003. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best New Artist of 2003?, 5 Jan 2004
By A Customer
The quality of virtually every song is high even though there is a huge diversity of musical styles employed by the band. Mike Patto is surely one of the best writers of R&B/Jazz music around and Oli Lazarus' abilities as a top notch DJ in the London area only adds to the overall feel of the music. Add to this an array of excellent vocal talents and you have an album which has something for everyone. My favourite track Runaway employs a beautifully complex bass line and, unusually for this genre, a real drummer. This gives the track plenty of oomph; something missing from many dance tunes these days. The vocal overlay is bordering on pop; the combined effect is extremely pleasing to the ear. I believe that if this track is released as a single it will be a crossover hit. Back to base is another excellent song which could also lead to great things if released from the the album. Of the singles so far, Second Guess is reminiscent of Steely Dan in their heyday. Overall an excellent debut album and I look forward to their follow up.
