5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Blend, 1 Jun 2003
I bought Billion Dollar Gravy on the strength of its reviews and some of the London Elektricity back-catalogue. I'm glad to say, I was really impressed.
I'm starting to worry that drum and bass is losing some of its originality. DJs seem too often to just keep to such a simple sormula. Every so often, however, an album comes along which gives me hope, London Elektricity's Billion Dollar Gravy is one of those albums for me.
The album is a great blend of chilled breakbeat and classic drum and bass. The inclusion of a brilliant live drummer (The Jungle Drummer), along with some vocalists very well matched to their respective tracks (Liane Carrol, Terri Pace and Robert Owens) and a strings section (Orkestra Galactica) really set this album apart from other recent drum and bass LPs.
Tony Colman (the man behind London Elektricity) uses great breaks, samples and melodies to create a really enjoyable, varied album which will almost certainly stand the test of time.
Billion Dollar Gravy is such a bright, sunny album, and will probably stay on my headphones almost all summer.
The album reminds me in a way of a slightly more lively New Forms (Roni Size & Reprazent), a truly classic album which provided so many people with a soundtrack to their summers in 1997.
Drum and bass addicts and newcomers alike should definately give this album a listen, I'm pretty that after a couple of listens, you'll definately not be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars This album is fat, simple, 12 Jun 2003
By Darren (London) - See all my reviews
There's nothing clever about it, London Elektricty just realised that the pretentious sax filled stuff just isn't nodding heads. London Elektricty does exactly what Peshay and his collective set out to do with Fuzion except this is a much more completed article lasting more than 3 tracks.

If you prefer your D n B rolling and atmospheric without having to endure token sax riffs and whale humping sounds then this is it.

Good work fella.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plugged into the mains, 25 Sep 2005

(REAL NAME)
Billion Dollar Gravy is flawless example of the reasons why drum and bass music stays afloat. When the forces of chaos try to shake the foundations of electronic music, rest assured that these guys will still be in the studio putting their heads together. This album is an ode to their professionalsim as both live performers and studio heroes.
This is s prime portion of rolling, jazz-tigned drum and bass with some glorious vocals thrown in for good measure. You c wake up to this album, drive your car to it or even just walk about town to it, but whatever you do, you'll do it twice as fast!
Technically the prodction is up there with High Contrast and the forgotten heroes of the moving shadow records crew (Who really started this movement). Uplifting and inspirational.
I also saw these guys live recently and it was dignifed, tight and terribly exciting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
What a great album. Beautifully crafted piece of melodic drum and bass. A real treat while driving through the city in the early hours after a night of heavy stuff in the club!

2.0 out of 5 stars I Love those Beats!
Brilliant album overall. Lushly recorded drums that bring a real human element to things, especially combined with the soulful vocals and emotive melodic hooks. Read more
