Amazon.co.uk Review

If ever a group's name were wrapped in florid irony, it's surely that of the Thorns. The Thorns is a bright, buoyant summit meeting of contemporary popmeisters Matthew Sweet, Shawn Mullins and Pete Droge. Backed by an all-star studio ensemble that includes Jim Keltner, Greg Leisz, Brendan O'Brien and Roy Bittan, the three nominally insulated musicians do more than claim the legacy of Crosby, Stills & Nash on the harmonic riches of "Think It Over" and the glorious "Now I Know". (It's equally hard to imagine the baby-boom icons wrapping themselves around the chunky funk of the title track here or the pointed impressionistic allegory of "Dragonfly".) They also find a musical common ground that can't help but echo history in its folk-rooted vocal glories yet forges an ego-sublimating higher ground that's anything but nostalgic. Fans of the three musicians may recognise their various sensibilities at work throughout, but this is a rewarding collaboration that virtually defies deconstruction. Don't be misled by the name--this is a beautiful, accessible, musically fragrant bouquet. --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best, 5 Jun 2003
By A Customer
This album of beautifully crafted pop music immediately evokes Crosby Stills and Nashs' amazing harmonies and beautiful melodies but the story doesn't end there.Although they wear their musical influences on their sleeve, their music is fresh, exciting and new--- as well as being derivative. To find an album today that hasn't got one weak track from beginning to end ,is a bit of a rarity but "The Thorns" is one such album.
I haven't been so enthusiastic about a band and an album in a long time but these guys really hit the spot.
For fans of this kind of music --you won't be dissapppointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars ... I can't wait for the next one!, 4 Jun 2003
By ampar (somewhere in your computer) - See all my reviews
I just hope this is more than a one-off marketing ploy to revive their solo careers. This is a wonderful album, without a bad or boring track on it. It may not (only time will tell) rank up there with Déja Vu - to name one obvious reference - but at this point, who cares? It's such a relief to hear great singing on material worth the care. It's very varied, and cleverly sequenced (with an overall tendency to the mid-paced ballad), and I've played it more than anything I've bought since the last (and criminally overlooked) Bangles album. If I have a criticism, it's that I wish there'd been a bonus disc with the demos on it, and I'm amazed I'm saying that, as I normally find that kind of plus a minus. But here, I'd love to hear the guitars more, and their voices more up-front. It's not a bad production - far from it, it's excellent of its type - it's just that there's another way for this band to go, a little rawer, a little more "live", a little more exciting, and I hope they develop into that for the next one.
For the moment - and for this summer - this one is just fine, and I'm continually uplifted by it. I hope a new generation is inspired to pick up guitars, write great songs and sing together. It's not that easy, and if the Thorns make it sound that way, that's part of their sheer class.
Buy. And while you're at it, get Doll Revolution, for pretty much the same reasons.

4.0 out of 5 stars Like listening to The Eagles - 20 years on., 25 Sep 2003
Having liked 'Lullaby', I became interested in The Thorns when I heard that it numbered Shawn Mullins. I'm now really, really, wide smile kind of glad someone told me about them.

This album is about 3 guys getting together with their guitars, having a session with harmony, melody and lyrics, and clearly having a great time listening to each other and the sound they make. You can hear it in just about every song - they're really enjoying themselves.

The album contains quite a large breadth of sentiment and emotion, all described in the same style, ranging from the nod-nod wink-wink all-knowing-smile that is 'Long Sweet Summer Night', via the deeper and rather out there 'Now I Know' (which, like a couple of the others, smacks of Moody Blues influence), to the quite bleak (yet not exactly melancholy) 'Dragonfly'.

Even though they display a couple of quite heavy influences (see title), they never lose sight of their songs being theirs, and rather than making you think they aren't bringing you anything new, it gives a familiarity that you find makes the album very easy to listen to.

Well done guys, looking forward to you doing it again next time.

DS/MA
