Amazon.co.uk Review

New York City Ballet 2, like its bestselling predecessor, is still designed to sculpt and tone your body; but this second edition has also learned the lessons of the original routine, which was difficult to use for those without formal ballet training. This second workout attempts to be accessible to all, providing a glossary explaining ballet terminology and introducing such steps as Plies and Tendus. Be warned though, this will still take practise if you are new to ballet.

The routine itself is also less demanding than the first, but includes one of the best abs workouts to be found on an exercise programme. While the steps do not offer a cardio workout, they are enjoyable once mastered and will make you feel more graceful. Combining ballet and yoga is all the rage at gyms, so a good tip is to tie this in with your favourite yoga programme for that ideal posture and definition. All in all this is a great improvement on the first edition and certainly more enjoyable than watching a Big Brother celebrity's dance routine.

On the DVD: New York City Ballet 2 offers pristine images and a 5.1 Dolby sound. This works wonderfully on the choice of classical and contemporary tracks. There is also the option to develop your own routine, which is useful if you are never sure how much time you have spare to exercise. The DVD also offers a movement combination which slowly takes you through the steps to learn a dance sequence. --Nikki Disney

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Workout!, 14 Aug 2003
By A Customer
I bought the Workout 1 & 2 DVDs together (at a discount) and have found them to be a great way of working out, especially if you are like me and did ballet many years ago! I found the 2nd DVD to be slightly better in it's navigation and also the instructions were clearer - especially when referring to the right leg and the dancers use their left leg giving a mirror image which is a lot easier to follow. Having both of the DVDs I can switch between the 2 because, although they are not very different, there is enough difference to add a bit of variety. It might not be easy to follow for someone who has never done ballet but it would be a good way of being introduced to it and getting a really deep muscle workout. Having said that some of the moves are not strictly ballet but are derived from a ballet step. Finally if you are wondering whether to get the video or DVD then definitely get the DVD as this has a lot more functions on it - such as selecting the exercises one by one or programming the list you want to do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exhausting but worth it, 3 Mar 2005
By A Customer
This is a serious deep muscle workout that will challenge anyone at any fitness level. The abdominal work is particularly demanding and does require a certain level of fitness before attempting it or neck and shoulder strain could result. You need to know your limitations and work within them, there is little or no modification advice given on the DVD so you have stay aware of what your body is telling you

However, I loved this DVD and I'm already enjoying the dramatic changes it's making to my shape and my stamina. Although there is no aeorobic component to the workout you can get that on a stationary bike or a treadmill at any gym. Treat yourself to bit of grace and peace as you get your stretches and resistance training. Well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Workout!!!!!, 19 Jan 2004
By S. Lambert "monty" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I usually work out to yoga videos, but needed a change to keep my motivation going. I tried this DVD after reading the other reviews and found it to be a brilliant experience. I haven't done ballet since I was in junior school, but did remember some of the movements and really enjoyed all of the programme.

The thing that has struck me the most is how quickly this programme tones up the body, without strain and the time to complete it flies by. I would recommend this to anyone, as the exercises are controlled and you only need to do as much as you feel comfortable with.

The DVD features of selecting contemporary or classical music are a must, as is the ability to select the exercises according to areas of need, to create your own individual programme.
