4.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite eastern eroticism, 9 Jan 2006
By A Customer
I first saw this film on BBC4, and I've been looking for it on DVD ever since. You might think that the cultural difference between the West and the Asian nations means that Japanese film-makers can't produce an erotic movie, but you couldn't be further from the truth. This film is definitely erotic, but not in the blatant, gratuitous way that we've come to expect and loathe from Hollywood producers. It also has a comic element that makes you smile rather laugh out loud. The acting is superb and the locations genuine, giving the film a pleasant cultural feel. I sincerely hope that the East continue to make films of this calibre and never stoop to the low levels of so-called cinematic entertainment of western film-makers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real gem, 11 Jun 2006
By Japan fan "Jay" (Cornwall UK) - See all my reviews
This is a film about life, it does have some erotic moments, but it not just about erotism, if you watched it just for that element I suspect you would be dissapointed. The sex scenes are emotionally charged but at the same time quite funny in a very charming way. It sometimes has the subtleties of an arthouse French film and touched on things totally unexpected from a Japanese film -such as the main characters failure in his work, marriage and general success in life, polar opposites to the typical Japanese achievment ethic, this shows a different side of the Japanese character, one that is perhaps born of the strange world of recession the Japanese have recently found themselves in.
The tramp - the main characters friend and confidant - is a wonderful sage character and has some terrific observations on what is the mad world we all find ourselves living in. He sends our hero on a search for hidden treasure, and he finds a girl, a girl with a very odd problem of the H2O variety this is where the kinky sex comes in, which at times is absolutely hilarious. He comes to her in search of treasure an almost mythical golden Buddha hidden in the house by the red bridge, he doesn't find the Buddha but much much more.
This is a feel good film, but not in a cheap obvious way, watch it and learn something about life and terrific film making.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely film, 4 Oct 2006
A beautifully made film with a sense of humour and erotism! A real tonic to the volience and horror of most Japanese films.

2.0 out of 5 stars ok
This is probably not a movie you will remember long after you've seen it, but I still enjoyed seeing it. The story is lovely, but the acting could have been a lot better.
