    i brought these phones over a year ago and they were the most comfortable headphones i ever wore, the sound is superb and much thought has gone into the design my only niggle is the fact that they have recently broken on the hinge arm my fault i dropped them but i would have liked them to be stronger other than that... look after them and you will get much joy from these great comfy 'phones!!!

    Sound quality is always a big issue where headphones are concerned, with cheaper headphones tending to lack the dynamics and accuracy of the music. So it's a surprise to hear a pair of headphones from Philips that actually make you want to listen for hours. Apart from being a little noisy for quiet home listening you get the advantage of a large dynamic range and a very comfortable feel, if anything they sound like they cost a lot more and certainly are worth considering if your looking for powerful sounds without breaking the bank. I found the HP840's to be almost too nice to the music and have a tendancy to make everything sound a bit "better" than it really is, which is no bad thing but isn't ideal for true representation of the sound. With the large dynamic range and strong realisation of the higher frequencies they are more suited to rock music but will handle most styles without breaking a sweat. Should you buy them? Well that depends, if you are after the best sound for around this price range you won't find better however if you can stretch a bit higher it's worth looking around. The only thing that lets these headphones down is that they are not quiet but with the "Clarity" drivers, Philips new driver technology I found they can sound better than a pair of speakers at double the price, if you fall into a catorgory that requires good listening on a budget you won't be disappointed, as they excel compaired to anything else around this price range. A must for any audiophile on a budget that requires comfort whilst not loosing sound quality.

    This has to be the most comfortable pair of headphones I have ever owned, as well as sounding great! The cushioned pads sit around my ears nicely (rather than fall out of my ears or squeeze my earlobes like my sony MDR-Q33 do [google search for pics or reviews on this reveals all]), and it is a snug fit with the self adjusting headband.

    Unlike earbuds and other headbands I have used, these deliver a balanced sound across all frequencies. Bass is deep and refined, treble crisp and clear and I am not having to whack up the "bass" or "treble" settings on the graphic equalizer on my MD or creative audigy card, unlike with earbuds.
    Another thing, like more expensive professional headphones I suppose, whacking the volume to max on my computer and MD does not create any distortion at all, just a louder sound!

    Another great thing - comes with 4m of detachable cable instead of the 3m amazon quote (maybe due to new packaging), and the 3.5mm to 6.5mm adapter screws onto the 3.5mm jack on rather than the normal straight push-in-plug, which makes a more secure connection.

    In conclusion - I'm sure I have paid too little for these, having bought this based on other good reviews and demanding a hight quality set of headphones. Highly recommended if you are not concerned about the bulky size (then again these are not designed for going out and about listening to music with).
