Synopsis

SLACKERS is a knee-slappng addition to the teen gross-out comedy genre. Directed by former fashion photographer Dewey Nicks and written by AMERICAN PIE 2 scribe David H. Steinberg, this raunchy and irreverent farce takes many of its cues from the original coed comedy ANIMAL HOUSE, and also clearly shows the raunchy influence of THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY. Dave (Devon Sawa), Jeff (Michael C. Maronna), and Sam (Jason Segal) are seniors at Holden University who have conned and cheated their way through four years of college and are prepared to cheat on their final exam before graduation. However, a severely eccentric nerd who calls himself "Cool" Ethan (RUSHMORE's Jason Schwartzman in an eerily brash role) blackmails them, threatening to have them expelled unless they help him get the girl of his dreams. Of course, the smooth-talking slackers promptly agree to Ethan's demands, not realizing the severity of his obsession with Angela (James King), a brainy and beautiful classmate. What at first seems like an easy task for the amoral ladies' men quickly becomes more complicated as Dave falls for Angela himself. SLACKERS includes some outlandish performances from Laura Prepon as Angela's sex-obsessed roommate and a startling cameo from 1950s screen siren Mamie Van Doren, but the action is propelled by the freakishly funny Jason Schwartzman, whose band, Phantom Planet, provides the film's music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Guaranteed Laugh a minute thanks to Cool Ethan, 24 April 2003
'Not another teen movie!' I hear you cry, but this is way different than films such as American Pie and Road Trip. This is not a bad thing though.
Jeff, Sam and Dave, 3 typical 'party-first and study-later' guys are in their final year of University. Upto this point they have managed to cheat their whole way through high school and college, but their little secret is about to blown wide-open by the campus geek Cool Ethan (Jason Schwartzman). Cool Ethan catches them cheating and threatens to get them kicked out of Uni, unless they get him Angela, and girl who he holds an wierd and twisted obsession for.
However, Dave (Devon Sawa) finds himself falling in love with Angela and must decide to choose the girl and face getting him and his friends kicked out of Uni, or helping Cool Ethan and missing out on true love.
Despite the romantic tendencies this film has, I recommend this film to anyone who likes to laugh as this is guaranteed to having you laughing from start to finish, all thanks to Cool Ethan!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Film, 27 Jun 2003
By A Customer
Never before in the field of human film making has a film starring so few, made me laugh so much. Insane in parts, just crazy in others, this film will make you laugh so hard you might loosen your bowels.

Devon Swaha shows again that he can be brilliant in a comedy (see Idle Hands) and Jason Schwartzman hasn;t been this good since Rushmoore. With a supporting cast of funy, funny people this film delivers on all levels, just don't watch sober.

3.0 out of 5 stars Shameless, 19 May 2006
I recommended a film 'Slacker' to a friend of mine, a groundbreaking movie that gave it's name to the type of people depicted in the film, the only film ever to have its title fall into the dictionary, in the same way Generation X did as a book's title. Anyway, long story short, he went out and bought this.

I thought I may as well watch it before he took it back, and was appalled. Ok, so there are a few jokes, but nothing with the surreal charm of Scrubs (despite the bath scene) or the acerbic, at times politically incorrect, wit of Family Guy, both examples of how good comedy from America can be.

I'm afraid it really is nothing more than another teen comedy. If you like that sort of thing then I suppose you won't be disappointed, if you thought you were getting something with the genius of Will Ferrel in it then you will be (although Schwartzman isn't horrendous).
