Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

With two former members on paternity leave and their core membership down to three, Tuva Rock finds these south Siberian alt. folk rockers getting back to basics. Despite being a regular feature of their current live shows, the band's sole female contributor Sailyk Ommun only features as a "guest vocalist" on one track and supplies the occasional flourish on the giant Tuvan zither the group are named after. As the name would suggest, Tuva Rock concentrates on Albert Kuvezin's grinding electric guitar more than their previous album Aldyn Dashka. That in itself isn't a problem. Rock is back in vogue big time, and when this band decide to rock out, as on the driving "Langchyy Boom" and the extraordinary "Dorug Daiym", they're very impressive.

Radical reworkings of traditional Tuvan folk songs have always been their speciality, and fortunately there's still plenty of igil and morinhuur (Tuvan stringed instruments) in evidence. Unfortunately, Albert seems to have overdone the use of his ultra-bass kanzat style vocals. And when does this in English, as is the case on the five original compositions he contributes, the joke wears thin pretty quickly, intentionally or not. Maybe it's the switch from using part-time Mekon Lu Edmonds (who has played lots with the band) to pop producer Paul Corkett, but Tuva Rock lacks the subtlety and atmospherics that made its predecessor such an engaging record. An intermittently enjoyable, though not essential addition to their canon. --Jon Lusk

5.0 out of 5 stars kargyraa we can all understand, 16 Aug 2003
By A Customer
i've always felt one weakness Central Asian Music
had in the West was a lack of good translation and
thereby a real lack of understanding of the culture
from Western listeners. That is why i find it especially
annoying that when a group finally starts doing songs
in English that reviewers reinterpret the throat-singing
sound that they lauded as so incredible when in a foreign
language as merely a gimmic when they can understand what
is being said. Yat-Kha finally gives us in the West the
chance to grasp the meaning of the songs as only native
listeners could have before, hopefully we're ready for
the full experience.

Having roots in both traditionals and rock Yat-Kha is
uniquely positioned to hybrid the two forms, once again
they pull it off in a way that no one else has been able to,
making the electric instruments sound perfectly natural in
the traditional melodies. Rather then stiff and confused
cut and paste feel most hybrid forms end up with Yat-Kha

has the understanding to find the greatest strengths of the
modern and traditional and the musical talent and savvy to
meld them fluidly creatively building a style all their own.

If you've enjoyed Yat-Kha in the past you will be thoroughly
pleased with this release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kickin, 2 Aug 2003
By M. Alman "aismi6" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I first saw this band live at a summer festival in sleepy Dorset last year. Out of nowhere this eclectic mix of driving rock guitars, throat singers and original Tuvan (its some small province of Mongolia I think) instrumentalists rocked into gear like nothing I had ever heard. I was lucky enough to snap up their homemade live CD at the backstage stall. When I saw the small prelease review of this new album in Mojo I placed a preorder for Tuva.Rock and was not dissapointed. Heavy rocking riffs with a big difference with the blend in of their ethnic and cultural roots. This band is good on CD but have to be seen live to be fully appreciated. No euphamisms here, when they sing "ride my little horse" they actually mean a horse. No Motorbikes in Tuva.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you like your rock with a mongolian twist..., 1 Jan 2006

Better than Re-covers, tight sound with plenty to keep you listening. Having seen them live and loved it, I got this and wasn't dissapointed. Despite this having less recognisable tunes than Re-covers, this is by far the most listenable. It rocks!
