Western Digital 120GB 7200RPM Hard Drive 8MB Cache

Western Digital 120GB 7200RPM Hard Drive 8MB Cache

Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Cool-running, quiet operation, superior performance and industry-leading reliability make these next-generation WD Caviar SE drives the perfect hard drives for desktop and enterprise storage

Fast -- WD, the first to introduce an 8 MB buffer, has advanced the caching algorithms of this new and improved Caviar family of hard drives, resulting in next-generation high performance that matches the speed of most 16 MB cache drives.
Heat is a major contributor to hard drive wear, and cool drive operating temperatures help increase long-term drive reliability. WD achieves the lowest operating temperature of any hard drive in it's class, including slower drives spinning at 5,400 RPM, by lowering the drives' power consumption through advanced design of electronics and firmware.
Today's PCs, digital video recorders and gaming machines are increasingly operated in environments where noise is less tolerated. WD minimizes WD Caviar noise to levels virtually below the threshold of human hearing with its WhisperDrive technology, which features a highly efficient power driver design. And to cut seek noise, Soft Seek technology streamlines read/write seeking algorithms, resulting in the drive operating more efficiently when accessing and writing data.

Product Description

WD Caviar 120 GB Special Edition, the latest addition to Western Digital's reliable, award-winning hard drive family, is designed to maximize desktop computer performance for activities requiring high-performance hard drives such as computer gaming, digit

5.0 out of 5 stars best until serial ATA takes off, 4 Mar 2004
By D.Buxton "Dale Buxton" (Bradford, England) - See all my reviews
I didnt purchase this drive from Amazon, but for those of you thinking about it,heres some information.

Lets face it,the majority of us buy a pc for games, the internet, and using MS works, some for music, and some for video applications. And the slowest piece of any pc is the Harddisk (hdd)At the moment, the fastest drives are the ATA with buffers, as this one has, the buffer is simply a part of the storage on the drive (in this case 8mb) that is filled with frequently used instructions, therefore, rather than you having too wait when you select an instruction, its already preloaded into the buffer, meaning the drive doesnt need to be used at all or used less. This in turn means quicker load times.

Also, for the most-of-us, a 120GB (GigaByte) is the most amount of storage you'll ever need.As even the most up to date games rarely need more than 2GB of HDD space.

So basically from a cost versus size perspective, this is the best drive on the market at the moment, in my opinion.

If you're considering purchasing a drive, take into account 3 things that are 'musts', firstly, the drive WILL be ATA (as serial ATA is just taking off and the costs of such drives and benefits are just not worth it yet), secondly, the drive WILL have a buffer, be it 2mb or 8mb, and thirdly, the drive WILL have either 80 or 120GB or storage. Also take note you lose between 5 & 10% or storage when you format the drive for use.

To sum up, Western Digital has been around for years, and ALWAYS produce a good product, the drive is a good size, with an 8mb buffer, and i believe it transfers upto 133mb per second, which is the fastest that ATA can transmit data, and its a good price, although you may get cheaper mail order, but customer service with mail order tends to be not-so-good in my experience, and you'll also lose Amazon's damn-good return policy.

If you need a new drive,or an extra drive, just buy it you won't be disappointed.

Hope this helps.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Reliable Drives. Recommended., 18 Jul 2003
Western Digital is one of the leading manufacturers of Hard Drives. This one does not dissapoint. The 8MB cache is the important thing here. It allows the drive to perform to a similar standard as ATA133, eventhough it is only ATA100. So despite the slower spindle speed the extra cache makes up for it.
These drives will last a long time since they have such high capacities. They come with 3 year warranties, though I doubt you will need them. My only complaint with this drive is that it operates louder than others. If the sound level is important to you then i recommend you opt for a Seagate Baracuda 120GB w/ 8MB cache aswell.

I have used many of these drives and i haven't had a single problem with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Western Digital 120Gb hard drive, 31 Dec 2003
By Mr. Thomas K. Mcgowran "mcgowran" (Cumbria) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having read some reviews on the Internet I was a bit wary of installing a second hard drive - I am a computer novice. But within an hour of receiving the unit it was installed and operating correctly. The process could not have been easier - Windows XP provides a step-by-step guide. No doubt installing it as a new drive would be more complex, but for me I found it hard to believe how easy it was to double the capacity of my computer.

I would advise caution re. problems with static when installing the unit as this can cause damage. Also, look up "add a second hard drive" in a search engine - there is some useful advice to be had.

Overall this is one of the simplest and most cost-effective upgrades I could have made to my computer and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
