best until serial ATA takes off, 4 Mar 2004
I didnt purchase this drive from Amazon, but for those of you thinking about it,heres some information.Lets face it,the majority of us buy a pc for games, the internet, and using MS works, some for music, and some for video applications. And the slowest piece of any pc is the Harddisk (hdd)At the moment, the fastest drives are the ATA with buffers, as this one has, the buffer is simply a part of the storage on the drive (in this case 8mb) that is filled with frequently used instructions, therefore, rather than you having too wait when you select an instruction, its already preloaded into the buffer, meaning the drive doesnt need to be used at all or used less. This in turn means quicker load times. Also, for the most-of-us, a 120GB (GigaByte) is the most amount of storage you'll ever need.As even the most up to date games rarely need more than 2GB of HDD space. So basically from a cost versus size perspective, this is the best drive on the market at the moment, in my opinion. If you're considering purchasing a drive, take into account 3 things that are 'musts', firstly, the drive WILL be ATA (as serial ATA is just taking off and the costs of such drives and benefits are just not worth it yet), secondly, the drive WILL have a buffer, be it 2mb or 8mb, and thirdly, the drive WILL have either 80 or 120GB or storage. Also take note you lose between 5 & 10% or storage when you format the drive for use. To sum up, Western Digital has been around for years, and ALWAYS produce a good product, the drive is a good size, with an 8mb buffer, and i believe it transfers upto 133mb per second, which is the fastest that ATA can transmit data, and its a good price, although you may get cheaper mail order, but customer service with mail order tends to be not-so-good in my experience, and you'll also lose Amazon's damn-good return policy. If you need a new drive,or an extra drive, just buy it you won't be disappointed. Hope this helps.
