This is great music superbly played. Unfortunately, with the exception of Catherine King, the singers are dreadfully prissy and affected - except for the bass, who just sounds downright bored most of the time. As usual the whole thing is fuzzed up with too much vibrato, with the result that the viols and the vocals belong in different universes. Those expecting the magic of the young Emma Kirkby will be disappointed. In the purely instrumental pieces, those expecting the magic of fretwork will not.
