This was another of my 3 Naxos for the price of 2, on the off-chance discoveries. After a casual play or two I'd dismissed it as a sort of oriental minimalism, but a recent serious listen showed me how completely wrong my initial assessment was. Whilst being very delicate and restrained in mood, there is so much depth in here you could never hear it all. Musically, it's on a line of evolution from Debussy and Messiaen, with all the subtlety and beauty that implies. But it's spirit is unmistakably Japanese in that it evokes pools of Koi, the ephemerality of cherry blossom, fifty words for rain and sitting perfectly still whilst holding all the contradictions of the world in perfect balance in the mind. This is Zen music that will, if you let it, take a complex and divided mind all the way in to the place of peace and perfect acceptance of what is. And I'm not talking New Age fluff here.

Credit to the Toronto New Music Ensemble who have allowed themselves to become this music in order to play it. Credit to Naxos, as ever, for finding them and recording them so faithfully.

This is my first Takemitsu recording but it will not be my last.

This is a lovely CD. The music is spare and delicate yet intense, and the playing is beautiful.
